I've always been fascinated by the things people do in their spare time when they can do exactly what they want to do. Men and sheds are a particularly fertile field. Women tend to do their thing in the comfort of the house.

I was delighted to see Andy's picture of the clock movement he has made.

It struck me that we could perhaps start a new topic devoted to spare time skill. So Andy starts it off and my contribution is this:

It's a small steam engine made from scratch and is based on the Stuart 5A but a longer stroke. One of these will drive a 14 foot boat with steam at 250psi. By the way, we don't like to call them models, it's exactly the same construction and materials as a full size engine, just smaller. So come on out there, let's hear about what you make in your spare time. I reckon we could be in for some surprises!

I love the rich colour! So warm and inviting! (they look steep to me also!)

Let's all go over to Tom's with our high heels on and run up his stairs.

What do those of us who live in bungalows photograph?

Do you have a loft ladder?

Well, you have saved me a job, thankyou. It looks exactly the same as ours...and the same way up too. The botton of ours rests on the floor, like yours, and the top is up above, in the loft. I find that this is probably the best way of using these things. I know it is a bit conventional, but what the hell!

...they look steep too! (very minimalist....just what you favour isn't it?)

I shall get the camera out this afternoon if I get the chance.

Have sent Stanley my email with pics of our stairs. Funny how we are all so different isn't it? Still, that is what makes us unique! (ours is a Capstan staircase which is built in a U shape....and are totally 'see-through'! I worry about the grandkids falling through them actually.) May I add, they were a nightmare to paint....as you can well imagine.

Mel....did you do that cross-stitch in your pasage? Sorry, but I notice things like this, and I recognise the design!

Big Kev....that colour on the lower half of your walls....is that a suede paint affect? Very nice! I have gone a wee bit mad with the suede paint myself in some areas. Another big job. I think it looks stunning, but I am not saying it comes easy to me.(OOOooooo.....have just had a closer look....it is WALLPAPER is it not?)

I just want to add that the pinkish strips added to the front of each stair were painted on (by me) because our darling dog was losing her eyesight due to Diabetes. I checked with the vet, it seemed like the best colour. She didn't have a problem going UP the stairs, but coming DOWN the stairs everything merged for her, so she could not differentiate individual steps...and it affected her confidence. Eventually, she could not climb the stairs at all and we had to carry her up. She was not a small dog! We are left with the painted edges until next time we gloss the stairs!

Yes Maz I did. I dabble now and then but it's not very often at all these days.

Come on Stanley! Wake up from your mid morning nap and pop my pics on......pretty please.

Mel.....bit of work that cross stitch! Well done! ( my current one is taking me close to two years to complete.....and then there is the framing to decide on. I get a bit sick of doing it, but I am almost there now and VERY determined to finish!)

I have one on the go at that moment that has taken me about 5 years and it's not even half done. It's not that it's difficult (quite the opposite) I'm just bored of it. I don't enjoy ding the cross stitch so much these days.  The hardest one I ever did was a dragon wrapped around a castle. The colours were varying shades of greens and purples/lilacs and lots of half stitches. My ex ended up with that one although I don't think I would have wanted it anyway because of the memories it stirs.....

As for framing, there is a little shop in Stoke that I always go to. I drop the pic off and then collect it when it's done. I leave it entirely up to them. The only time I interfere is if it's for a particular room and I'm working to a colour scheme. Then I leave a pic of the room as well.

My hallway is due for decorating and I always pick a colour out of the cross stitch to paint the walls. That way I know it won't look amiss.  We've been hanging back as Maggie was on her last legs and any accidents she had were always in the hallway...we have carpet tiles on the floor that can be easily washed or replaced.
