Interesting find but at the moment there is more heat than light in the theories being proposed around it. I'd like to see some proper analysis and interpretation and this takes time. My message is don't get too excited!

Yes, the report came over as a bit disjointed. There may be bits of the structure that are 17C and they may have found a cat in the ruins but that does not make it a witches cottage. The building was clearly added to, modified and used well into the 19C with the evidence of the range. It was obviously buried after that date and not in the 17C. Why was it buried, pobably because it was easier than knocking it down when the reservoir was built.
Makes a good news story though.

The guy in the top hat is quoted in the Leader as saying the find is "like discovering Tutankhamun's tomb. The article describes the find as "17th Century wiches style cottage" - I wonder how thery know that? The archaelogist leading the dig is similarly scientific in saying "Its like discovering your own little Pompeii".
I'm sure all this has nothing to do with all the Pendleside plans for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the trials but I think your crap detector is working fine Comrade. Nolic

Wonder if that pub in London still has all the stuff hanging from the cieling in the bar....
......or will elfinsafety have closed it down by now ?

The guy in the top hat is Simon Entwistle the Colne ghostwalker and local historian. Perhaps the discovery has been embellished a bit.

Gloria , it was "Dirty Dick's" on Bishopsgate (near Liverpool St Station)....just checked , and all "the nasties" were put in glass cases in the 70's.....ah well !
Some say he was the inspiration for Dicken's Miss Hathersage....

Had mail from John. I'm not going to speak for him but he did say that he's known of the cottage for 40 years and it's on the first edition OS survey. He was quite ascerbic about 'local experts'! On the whole he thinks our scepticism is justified, more like PR hype from United Utilities than serious archaeological discovery. It's interesting but beyond that, no cigar!
