Ahhh, George Cohen, one of the great names for secondhand and new plant. Newton went to them in 1945 for skid mounted disel alternators when Bishop House flywheel burst. Buck and Hickman come to mind but more for machine tools. They're still in business as well. They certainly went into the right trades when they started. If either of them go down we can put the lights out and emigrate!

I was thinking about the effects of the recession and jacking. Because the trade is so much about emergency repair and safety maintenance you'd expect things to keep on an even keel. Anybody noticed work drying up?

George Cohen 600 Group. Another great British institution in heavy mechanical engineering. Over 30 years ago I regularly purchased boiler tubes and secondhand boilers from them.

Work drying up------last week I was talking to the Managing Director of Byworth Boilers of Keighley who are now the largest remaining totally British owned Boiler Manufacturing company within the U.K. He was conducting me around the impressive boiler shops and showing me several huge 10 tonne per hour steam output, wood-pellet fired steam boilers. The three boilers plus a massive waste heat boiler for operating in conjunction with a diesel engine were destined to be installed  into factories in the U.K. All excellent news.Byworth currently have a well filled order book.
I am also pleased to report that my son's company : H. A . McEWEN {BOILER REPAIRS } LTD; are very busy both on Industrial boiler repairs and new boiler installation contracts all over Britain. Good News!!

In addition to my previous post another local Pennine engineering firm are also flying the flag for the good old U.K.   James Proctor Ltd of Cow Lane, Burnley were established in the 1850s and became renowned for their range of chain grate stokers fitted to Lancashire and other designs of " mill " steam boilers. The firm's revolutionary, modern, state of the art design of wood-pellet and bio-mass automatic stokers give the U.K. a well earned lead in Europe for " waste " fuel firing.
Proctor Stokers are fitted to  Byworth Wood fired steam boilers destined for the home market and for overseas customers.
Despite we the British people being good at talking ourselves down, fortunately,we still lead most of Europe in Boiler Manufacture.

Remember the bloke who died at Altham in a fall from scaffolding? Here's the report of the court case.

Love the picture of Bass of Burton Bob (my home town)  Worked many times on the water tower in the centre of picture. Strange sensation climbing through the water tank at the top section.

Wink..if it stinks of Marmite,it probably is Marmite. Go to Top of Page
