Colin, I'm not sure what you mean by no menu in Gimp. There should be the toolbox (tall narrow window in the picture here) then a separate window when you open a graphics file using File/Open. The menus are along the top bar of each window. In the picture my mouse cursor is hovering on the Move Tool and the yellow bar is a `hint'.

Gimp graphics software

On that problem of not being able to move the photo, was it before or after you inserted text? When you add different things like text and a photo to a `canvas' in software like Gimp and Photoshop they add them in different `layers'. Think of like putting one transparency on top of another - one with your text and another with your photo. When they are superimposed and you look through, you `see' one picture with text and photo. When you try to edit the cover and it consists of two layers you have to deal with them individually. If you use the move tool and try to shift the text or the photo you will find one moves and not the other. To switch to the other click the `Layer' menu on the top bar of your image (book cover) window, go down to `Stack' and another menu will open. This offers things like `Select previous layer', `Select top layer'. Try these and see if one of them solves your problem. If it's not layers and you have followed my earlier instructions, then I don't know why your graphic won't move.

Bit of progress Pete. Iv'e got "Gimp 2 " so it might be a bit different. On mine i discovered that the tool box was covering up some of the functions, so i clicked on the square at top right and uncovered the hidden menue. I now followed your directions, every thig went well until i tried copying the pic, got it in the box but could not move it to the centre. The cross move tool moves the dotted border around the image box, makes a real mess. I think iv'e found someone who's a bit of an expert, so i will leave things til later. Thanks again.

Great if you've got hold of an expert Colin. Gimp comes up as individual small windows on your computer screen. You can move these windows anywhere you like and re-size them too. (I use Linux software but I think it's the same on Microsoft Windows). To move a window, move your mouse cursor to sit on the top, coloured horizontal bar of the window. Press the left mouse button and the cursor will probably change to a hand shape. Keep the button pressed and drag your mouse to drag the window about on your screen.

If you are working on a graphic in a Gimp window and you want to enlarge it to see better, go to the View menu, down to Zoom and you will see options for zooming in or out. If you then want to go back to the correct size, do the same and choose Fit Image in Window. You canalso zoom in and out using the - and + keys: press the - key to zoom out and press Shift and the + key to zoom in.

Hello everyone I hope this finds you well. No I haven't gone AWOL but I've been upto my eyes in grief. First I had a lovely flood in my flat on xmas eve and then on new years day my lovely little cat died and left me in a total depression. very soft us old strong steeplejacks! Also I've been pounding away at the typewriter re-typing the autobiography. Three quarters of the way through at the moment. I've been reading some of the comments about publishing on Lulu and it all seems a bit daunting. I was wondering when I've finished, could I put it on a disc and perhaps send it to Stanley or Peter to give me advice how to finish it off with regard to Font and margins etc. Alternitively if you could adjust it for me I would willingly make the necessary contribution for the work involved. As the book is designed for the older generation I have typed it in font size 14, but I think this may be too large. Anyway my dear friends, just to let you know I appreciate all the help you give and I hope that with your help I will one day 'get there'! My book is called 'Get in the shelter' which I heard my mum shout so many times.
Love to all from Tommy.

Tom, I'm happy to look at it but I would be loathe to do any adjustments to your file. I use Linux software and don't have Word so there is always a danger that any file I've worked on will not turn out right in Word. What's the word count on your book and what size is it megabytes? Does your software have the ability to make a PDF file of the Word document? A PDF cannot easily be modified but it should make a smaller file to send.

Tom, commiserations on the flood and the cat. If it's Word send me a disc and I'll have a look at it for you. Can't promise radical edit but I'll certainly adjust the format for you and put you on the right lines. If there are no pics in it you can just email it as an attachment.

Sorry Tom, I dived straight into your book problem and should have said, like Stanley, that I'm sorry to hear about the flood and the loss of your pet cat. These sort of things can throw you right off track. We were waiting for a big delivery by courier last Friday and it didn't arrive. That was a problem but to make matters worse the courier turned up at 8.00am on Saturday morning and I wasn't even dressed. Then I tried to shift some of the heavy stuff and ended up triggering my old sacro-iliac problem. One thing on top of another!

Thank you very much gentlemen for your courtesy with regard to my difficulties. I wish you better Peter and I know all about back pain! I was carrying a heavy RSJ once and the bloke on the other end (not a Jack I'd like to add!) decided to drop his end. I haven't felt my right foot for 25 years as a result OUCH! My nerve is trapped between my lumber discs and the doc's say best to leave alone. With regard to my book, it is in 'word' and there are photo's. I wont need a major edit Stanley, just a bit of manipulation to the margins and a bit of general advice with regard to the photo's. I'm at 38,000 words at the moment and have a little more to do. A couple of weeks should see it through and I'll send the disc to a convenient address if you contact me directly. Peter, Victor sent me his book and I couldn't believe the similarities between his life and mine. It's as though he's my half brother and I'm wondering if his dad ever got down to London while my dad was away Ha ha! Please pass on my best wishes the next time you contact him. Best wishes to all from Tommy. Ps. Why didn't Brunel invent an instant carpet dryer??

up at five this morning doing my secretarial tasks! I'm getting to the stage where I need to add photos. Could you explain how I can get say four photo's from my hard drive onto my 'word' page? I can get one on by useing the 'insert' but if I try to insert another photo, it deletes the first photo I put on. Do I have to use what is called 'cut and paste' because I haven't a clue how to do that. Well I do if someone needs their frontroom decorated! I want to put four small photo's onto the
page and then type some text underneath explaining what they are. HELP! Tommy. Ps. I sent off a request to the Imperial war musuem to see if they would let me use a couple of war photo's. I shouldn't have bothered. You should see the palaver and the prices. There's about ten pages of terms and conditions to get through and then the most exhorbitant prices you can imagine. As far as I'm concerned they are ripping off the public, the people who took the photo's are all dead and I wonder exactly what they got out of their photographs.

Re. the pics. I don't think it's worth bothering with the small pics. Just size them all 5" wide and 300dpi and insert them one after another. Nobody is going to crib about larger pics!  That's what I do anyway. You  do know that once you have inserted them you can click on them to select and then put your pointer in the bottom right hand corner on the small square and jiggle it till you get an arrow. Then click and hold on that and mve the pointer digonally across the pic. This resizes it and when you have done it it will centre automatically if you had the cusor centered in the first place when you did the insert.

As for using copyright pics, forget it, just not worth the trouble and expense.

I am happy to report that Volume IV of me memoir is published and you can get a copy on Lulu.com if you're feeling flush! Mrs Orange's new 20mb service had it's first real test this morning uploading and downloading big files. It was brilliant and three times faster than my previous best for files of this size. I've seen it take me three hours to get through the process, this morning it took less than half an hour to upload 15mb and download 200mb, brilliant! The whole process including ordering my copies took less than one hour.

What next? I think it's going to be me Dad's life story. I shall have a rest and a think.

Get going lads, it's easier than you think!

what a lovely picture Stanley and I will catch up with your stories as soon as I've finished this typing UGH! I'm in the winning straight now and there's one good thing about this awful weather, it's kept me in and on the typing. It would never have got done in the summer, a bright sun and I'm straight down the riverbank. I'm hoping to go to the Bewdley area this summer as my lad wants to do a bit of reminiscing. He used to holiday there and was very proud to drive the steam trains on the Severn valley railway. A neighbour where he was staying was one of the drivers and used to take him to work with him. My lad was only twelve so you can imagine the thrill of steaming down the track on the old 5000! We intend to do a bit of fishing on the Severn as he's after some barbel. I hope everyone is keeping well and I hope it won't be too long before I''m posting off my cd to you. best wishes to everyone from Tommy.
