A barking mad fundamentalist preacher forecasts the end of the world today using a combination of numerology and selected Biblical extracts. See this LINK.
I'm all in favour of whacky scares like this. Who knows, the people who believe it may have to readjust their world view when it does't happen. The nice thing is that if he is right I don't have to issue a retraction!

Did he not predict the same thing in 1994?

Well if only the good and the just were going it comes as no surprise that most of us are still here!. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be paying a visit to Boundary Mill today, this deserving cause is this years target for raising funds at the mill. Last year it was Pendleside Hospice who benefitted to the tune of £200,000 raised by staff and Mr R Bannister and a team who did The Great North Run.

Until the factions within Islam settle their differences ie Sunni and Shite nothing much will ever change. Just look at Iraq, it is Muslims killing Muslims much like it was before the invasion !!!

It was ever thus Frank, if they would stick to that and leave the rest of us out of it, things would be much better. Here in our home country we have our share of individuals who live outside the law, we do not need to import any more.

Kev, yes, not sure of the year but he has a track record.
Frank, you're right. After hundreds of years of tribal and religious conflict Mesopotamia had sorted its troubles out in terms of tribal and religious boundaries by 1900. We went in, decided that these matters weren't important. We bombed and gassed the region into unity and called it Iraq. Installed a puppet king and then turned the oil companies loose. For all his faults, Saddam kept the region under control by repression and that's why he was suppoertd by the west for so long. The constitution the Ba'ath Party used was basically the one we imposed in 1919. I see the Royal Navy has withdrawn its last training mission today, only a few British personell left now attached to the UN I think.

Whatever this country did or did not do 100 years ago is history. In the intervening years many countries have moved on and in doing so have improved their situation through such things as trade and good international relations. Yet there are countries that have not. Often everything else is blamed for their situation from the weather on up, very rarely do the inhabitants lay the blame at their own door, it is always someone else's fault, choosing instead to rely on aid and the assistance of a deity that only exists if believed in. The use of force will not change anything really and assistance of any kind is often regarded as interference unless it is hard cash. I believe that the best way to deal with an unsolvable problem is to work around it, but at the same time, contain it.

The fact won't go away that Sunni and Shite are not going to be united soon. Ever since Mohammed left there has been this conflict. The more weapons Saddam obtained the more Shites he killed, which would have been the case in 1919 ( the strongest always survive ) no matter the cause. Long may we continue to be strongest .

C.H. has got to be toast , hasn't he ?....Surely...
Not admitting the deception (Ooops ,sorry. "not being able to remember....etc ") because he doesn't want his wife (who shopped him) to have to admit that she was also commiting an offence.....come on !
How feeble is that ?

Peter, history or not, What it shows is that they had found a solution that kept the tribes and the religious factions apart which meant that friction was cut back to the borders. Frank is right, they have always fought. When we mixed them all together by creating Iraq we lit the fuse. From then on they either kill each other off in a civil war or grow up and realise it is futile and destructive. Catholicism versus Protestants in England and Europe was the same scenario. Difference was we got fed up of killing each other. Remember the English Civil War and the Thirty Year's War? Difference is we came to our senses, the Muslim factions haven't got there yet.
Brad, agreed, he's dug a hole for himself. It'll be a miracle if he climbs out.
I did a little job for a bloke in the workshop yesterday and realised yet again that while writing is fine and a satisfying use if time, doing something with your hands, especially if you are rescuing an atrefact that otherwise would be useless, is a delight!

Sorry to see Blackpool drop out of the Premier league after only one season, they were so excited last year. Big disappointment for the town.
There's a new law coming in that has surprised me. From the end of the month it is illegal to own a car without insurance unless it has a SORN registration. I thought that already applied? Evidently it means that it doesn't have to be on a public road to make the owner liable.

Maybe this will make whoever owns the disintegrating Volvo at the side of the road on the approach to the Designer Village do something about it...but probably not!

Evidently it means that it doesn't have to be on a public road to make the owner liable. The SORN registration is for road tax. The new law, starting today, is for insurance. You could have a motor vehicle with a valid tax disc, but no insurance.
The insurance database will now be checked against the road tax database.
No insurance + vehicle having a SORN (Stautory Off Road Notification) and you're OK.
No insurance + a valid tax disc and you're nicked...
