I had a very early digital watch which had a fault. If you tried to alter the time it started to play 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' over and over again. Fred Huppach couldn't cure it and wanted to send it back to Texas Instruments but I just took the battery out, set it to time and never altered it again. Amazing how I got used to making the adjustment automatically in my head.

World population has reached 7 billion. Can someone tell me whether this is 7,000 million or the American billion which I suspect is different.

It's 7,000 million = 7,000,000,000. As I write the world population is 6,971,916,072. Have a look at this website (LINK) and it will show you the current figures for USA and the World. Click the reload button on your browser after a few seconds and you'll see it has updated.

The UK government switched in 1974 from the `long scale'  numbering system (where a billion was 1,000,000,000,000, or a miliion million) to the `short scale' (1,000,000,000, or a thousand million). It's always the short scale in scientific and technical usage. I don't know of anywhere that uses the long scale now.

Looks like the Vicker's review and the attempt to re-invent the Glass Siegal Bill might be blocked by the EU business rules:

Just seen a report on the news, thieves turning their attention to stealing the  bronze metal plaques from war memorials. Apparrently, up to three per week are being targetted and stripped.

Flogging would be too good for any of these when caught in my book.

That's the problem Ian ...they can  flog  'em...
I know a scrap metal dealer in Derby who is dead straight.....
but there must be plenty more who aren't...!

You're right Brad. I always remember talking to a police inspector about the theft of a Lancashire boiler I was looking after. The scrap dealer said he'd bought it of a man called Smith in a pub, no paperwork. I commented that I couldn't understand how he thought he was going to get away with it and the Inspector said, "He's a scrap dealer Mr Graham. They're wired updifferent." I suspect that in some cases he might be right!

This caught me attention, a visit from the new slim-line Doc yesterday. And yes, I did nag him about the new platform....  (Gently!)

I heard that there's a move to mark the memorial plaques with something that shows up under UV light. Not much use if the scrap dealer melts it down!

Cloggy, all things in moderation! I'm trying to get him to start smoking a pipe, doesn't seem to harm me! Even my doctor has stopped nagging, he can see the evidence when I occasionally visit him.

He does look well doesn't he Moh.

What grabbed me was the lady from Missouri who overheard me haggling in Chaufrie's for a 3p discount because I was short of change and stepped in and contributed 5p to the kitty! I explained that I was trying to educate them into the principle of pensioner's discounts but she insisted I keep it. I got the discount, went home 5p richer (she wouldn't take it back) and with a warm glow about the basic kindness of most humans.
