Soon after sunset have a look to the South West you will see a thin crescent Moon with Mars and Saturn nicely in a straight line going Westwards.

(Assuming there's no clouds of course Tongue-out)

Tony, are you a  large, elderly, plump man with a monocle, clipped speech, Patrick for a first name, and a private observatory by any chance?

Does "thin crescent Moon with Mars and Saturn nicely in a straight line" presage any specific events? Fall of the government? Fall in Bradford and Bingley shares?

Patrick Moore is my hero

He is largely responsible for my interest in things Astronomical. I've been watching the Sky at Night all my life. I met him once after he did a one-man show in a local theatre. He's a very nice man.

I think it must be the Bradford and Bingley shares this time round - fire and pestulance are a thing of the past. Wink

Tony, If you're not sure what Nolic means about "the lights appear to the east of West Craven" do a search on this site for the words and you'll find some strange things!

I'm watching the skies. Glorious sunset, but no moon  and stars yet.

The clouds came over as soon as the sun went down. What a shame, hope you will tell us what to look for next Tony!

As usual, our weather has scuppered anyone's chances of seeing this event Frown

Never mind another one will no doubt be along soon.

Mel thanks for posting the link to your friends' photos - they are very good and astrophotography is something that I would like to get into at some stage. I have dabbled but I'm not going to post any of my photos Tongue-out

Stanley - thank you for pointing me at the lights topic. I'm off to read all the way through it now before I make any comment lolol

Tony, if you ever wanted advice, or just a chat about astrophotography, I am sure Martin (the owner of that site) would be more than willing to oblige. He has a real passion for anything in the sky. So much so that he takes his latest equipment to work with him and on sunny days spends his lunchbreak trying to get a good picture of the sun.

I bet that feels strange - do you manage to sleep?  I wake up once it comes light, I have taken to wearing the eye mask we got on the plane.

We looked at the sky last night (Friday night) and the sky was as clear as clear could be. Living in an area not renouned for light, the milky way was as clear to see as you can get. I will wait and on the next occasion I chance upon this sight, I will have a bash at some amateur drunk photography.
