Stanley, I have brought this topic back up for two reasons. Doc may have interesting facts to tell us about his house, as six years has past since these previous postings.
Also, how can we explain the discrepancy between the Census of 1891 showing my GGG Grandparents occupying the farm and the above info that you have posted? From pictures I have seen of the farm, there only appears to be the one dwelling? (no little cottages attatched for other dwellers?) On the 1891 Census I have, the Whittaker Family are the only people listed. Interesting...

I can't explain the above census results as I din't think they are mine. I've just gone through the 1881 and 1891 spreadsheet I use and have come up with these:
Harrison Elizabeth 48 Barnoldswick Prospect House 57 Barnoldswick St. James Square 14 Harrison Fred 13 Barnoldswick Prospect House 23 Barnoldswick St. James Square 14 Harrison Harriet Ann 20 Barnoldswick Prospect House Harrison James 54 Barnoldswick Prospect House Whittaker James 22 Barnoldswick Park Road Cottages 29 Barnoldswick Prospect House Whittaker (Whitaker) Mary 1 Barnoldswick Park Road Cottages 11 Barnoldswick Prospect House
The first address is the 1881 census and the second is 1891. Sorry about the formatting, it went haywire.

is it me or is the word "farm" missing from the set of census esults you have just put up stanley, it is possible that prospect house farm and porspect house are two seperate properties. In fact it would make a lot of sense as most large houses had "home farms".

How interesting Stanley, both Harrisons and Whittakers are in my family circa mid to late 1800s

The Foulridge Harrison's stayed at Noyna Hall, but they were Hatters !! It may be possible to find out ( if you really wanted to know ) by looking for a Birth Marriage or Death cert for someone around that time, or online parish clerks. Sure Wendy would know how to find out any information that exsists !!!

Is the Harrison at the Old Stone Trough farm one of these?

I got the above census information from the micro fiche readers down at Barnoldswick Library back in 2005 when I first started researching the house. I can't explain the discrepancy - sorry

As far as I know Prospect House and Farm are the same building. No sign of any other house on the site. The present conversion next door is the old barn. I searched the two censuses by name and no other prospect surfaced in Barlick. In this area 'house' and 'farm' seem to be interchangeable names for agricultural holdings, plenty of examples if you look at the map.

I agree that the terms house/farm are interchangeable too, from all the paperwork I have come across. Some use both expressions in the title, someonly one or tuther.
I was wondering if, when it came to farms or large dwellings they may record non-resident owners (tax purposes) and inhabitants....?

Maz. The census simply records the people present in the house at the time the count was taken, irrespective of status. This is why occasionally people are recorded twice, they travelled to another house and got there before the enumerator. If someone isn't there, they are not recorded.

One of the findings in my tree was a relative born in a "hall" but they were not wealthy landowners they were one of up to 40 families renting a room in what would have otherwise become a derelict building..

It was rumoured ,that if you were on one end , you could nip round the back and appear on the other as well ....!

I was unable to tolerate this mystery, so I haved searched both Census entries for the Harrison family. I find Docs original information to be incorrect.
Certainly the Harrison family were at Prospect House in 1881.
James Harrison Head 56 Farmer of 38 Acres Born Bracewell Elizabeth Wife 48 Farmers Wife Born Barnoldswick Harriet Ann Daug 24 Mill Hand Cotton Born Barnoldswick Fred Son 13 Farmers Son " Ernest Son 9 Scholar '
However...in the 1891 Census your information about the Harrison family being at Prospect is incorrect. Elizabeth is now a WIDOW, age noted as 57 and is listed as a Dressmaker. Lives with Fred and Ernest (sons) at 14 St James Square.
This tallies with my findings of the Whittakers being at Prospect House in 1891.
