Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

You could even roast the ducks with the same stuff you use to power the boat!I gleaned the following from a canalboat forum. It's a YouTube clip from Top Gear with the 'delightful' Jeremy Clarkson discussing how to run your diesel engine off veg oil. We've discussed this earlier in the topic if my memory serves me right. Run a diesel engine on veg oil clicky Views for and against warmly received. |

I'm all for running engines on chip fat but doesn't it make your exhaust fumes smell like a chip shop?

One of my friends used to have a book about driving vintage cars to picnics, where you cooked all the food in foil on the carburetta during the journey. Fascinating! The more complicated the dish the further you drove!

Yes - but is that so bad? Worse than diesel fumes? If we recycled Usmaniyahyah oil, we would have some gorgeous curry aromas wafting down the cut. We could vary it each day - Chinese on a Tuesday, Church Street Chippy on a Wednesday etc. Roast spuds a la Isuzu 55 - doesn't it make your mouth water? [Suddenly all Cally's friends remember a subsequent engagement when invited for a meal aboard the boat...] Tinker - I believe we can do that on the boat using the woodburning stove. Can't wait to try it! BTW: we've decided against calling the boat Bernulf. All boats are female, so it would sound odd referring to "she/her" yet having a male name. So we've plumped for the latin terms for Elaine's surname plus my first name. I name this ship: Rosa Calluna |

Sounds very nice - just need the boat to paint it on!

Warming your dinner on an engine was common practice. A tin of soup left on the HP cylinder for 4 hours was just right for dinner.

I'd be following the boat everywhere. I can't walk past the Usmaniu Usmnuia Usmoinai curry house without being drawn in.......

Thing is, BK, if you followed the boat the water would only come up to your ankles. You could give us a shove if the veg oil gunked up the engine. In the meantime here are a few dates from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society, of which I'm a new member: Wednesday 26th September 2007
IWA Talk - Water Supply to the L&LC, 19:30 at the Old Stone Trough, Kelbrook Saturday 27th October 2007

Oh frabjous day!Calloo! Callay! While not wanting to count any chickens (or ducks) before they're hatched, it looks like we've sold the house! Second viewing this morning by people who've sold their own house. Fingers, toes and everything else very firmly crossed... |
