According to this weeks BET, there is a proposal by Maple Grove Developments (Preston) to create a Supermarket and Car Parking for 275 cars on the current Carlson Filtration site at Butts. Apparently, plans are already underway to create a new food store and car park. The plans are at an early stage and rest on obtaining planning permission and a successful re-location of the Carlson Filtration operations.

You can read the article in the Barnoldswick and Earby Times (BET) and comment on the article here:

www.pendletoday.co.uk

The development company is holding an exhibition of the proposed plans on
Wednesday 30th Jan 2008 at the Rainhall Centre from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.

Good or bad idea, discuss..

Stanley, with the question worded as you say all them that can be bothered to turn up get to vote for them that can't be bothered.

First time I have got to vote for the whole of Barlick

On my way now.

Hadn't looked at it that way Ian.  So if you missed the vote don't worry, I voted no for the whole town.

The votes cast at this Town Poll effectively carry more weight than the average poll at a General Election! I suppose it's one way of getting the turnout figures up!

Does anyone know the result of the poll yet? I was on town this morning and forgot to look in the council shop window.

They probably haven't finished counting all the votes yet owing to the massive turnout lolol.

I visited the Barlick Town Council website where you'd think there might be some mention of it, but it seems very out of date (is this since Robert Kandt left, I wonder?)

So did I H. The website has'nt been updated for months, probably because they no longer have a Town Clerk as you say. Lets hope we don't get into a Zimbabwe situation.

I don't think there is much doubt which way the vote will fall.  Isn't it strange how local organisations seem to avoid OG.  I raised this 4 years ago and Doc actually approached some of them but it never came to anything.  As H says, with the election coming you'd expect the candidates to be making their voice heard.  You can usually tell when the elections are iminent because all of a sudden David Whipp appears in every pic in the local press opening something or other.  Very few sightings of any of them this year.  I think if someone counted the Mayor would get the prize over the last twelve months.  He really set out to raise the profile.

It is very quiet on the election front, time yet though. I see we have the BNP bloke again in Craven.
Been on town again this morning and still not looked to see if the poll result is out.
As to the dot thing H, how bloody arogant is that guy? the situation in Zimbabwe is a disgrace but I suppose par for the course with a bloke like Mugabe.
How people can watch events like that in other parts of the world and still not turn out to vote when they have the opportunity in a free society beggars belief.

What was the outcome of the vote?  I have all kinds of theories bobbing about my head....they can't count the votes without the town clerk....george bush or mugabe are somehow invloved and they are hiding the results!

Here you go Herb, this is the result of the Town Poll. Yo can't find this on the Town Council website as it has not been updated for months! Probably another effect of sacking the Town Clerk!

395 votes were counted

303 were against the development
91 in favour, with one spoiled ballot paper.

I think it worked out at a cost of about £8.00 per vote cast, I believe this will be recouped via the town precept.

Although the result was against the development it was a pretty dismal turnout.  I guess if it happens the planners would say that there was little opposition.  Too bad.

Decision day looks like May 13 at a special meeting of Pendle council West Craven Committee.

There is a useful piece of information in the BET this morning re. any objection letters sent in against this development.  Any letters sent in commenting on the original proposal will carry no weight as the developers have submitted and amended application dropping the size by one third.  They can argue that this has negated the original objections because they have not been re-stated regarding this proposal.  So, do what I have done, send in your objection again making sure that it is clear that it applies to the amended proposal.  Go to it kids, they are playing games with us!
