As you all know, my expertise in genealogy and access to sources doesn't begin to compare with some of you. Please can I impose on you to do some furtling for me for hard evidence about GEORGE PROCTOR.

What I know: He was senior partner in Proctor and Proctor of 3 Grimshaw Street Burnley for many years, probably to his death. As such he acted as secretary to many room and power companies, the Calf Hall Shed Company being one of them. He was appointed scretary of CHSC in March 1893, became the biggest shareholder in the company and died on July 6th 1922.

Equally important to me is where he lived from 1888 onwards as I suspect that, though not mentioned by name, he was advising the CHSC before he became secretary. I have reason to believe that after the death of Chistopher George Bracewell he moved into Bank Hall/House (Both names are used in the census) and later lived at Thornton in Craven, possibly in one of the big houses on the Drag. He had many interests besides CHSC in the area, The Big MIll Co at Earby and the Earby Gas and Light Company were but two.

Any information at all will be helpful. Thank you. S XXX

That's the family who lived here Gloria. He is the right age isn't he? Perhaps Stanley's George was born here after all.
Stanley, in another topic about Proctors you mention that George Proctor is recorded as living at Bank Hall in Barrett's 1896 directory.

Wendy, You know how you can buy extra memory to slot into your computer? You and the other members fulfill exactly the same function. I never looked in the index! You're right, I've just looked at the 1896 directory and there he is, George Proctor at Bank House. Thank you all very much!

Here's the relevant extract from the book I'm writing as it stands now:

Besides being an accountant, George was an investor. He had interests in many concerns and indeed became owner of the Big Mill Company in Earby. He was well known in the district and eventually resided here. In the 1891 census he is noted as living at 106 Manchester Road, Habergham Eaves, Burnley. The minutes for July 22nd 1891 mention negotiating with the gas company for the connection of C G Bracewell's former residence, Bank House to the mains. This always puzzled me because they never owned the property. On March 15th 1893 when he was appointed secretary his address was given as Bank House so I assume he had bought it sometime soon after the gas connection. Directories are usually accurate and Barrett for 1896 reports George as living at Bank House. In the census for 1901 his address is given as Throstle Nest, a comfortable house on the old road in the centre of Thornton in Craven. Enough evidence I think to show he had more than simply a business connection in the area before 1888, he was house hunting! If there is a candidate for the 'man behind the scenes' who advised and guided the promoters, he is the one. I have another, albeit fragile clue. The first minute book used by the directors was made by Waterlow Brothers and Layton Ltd, general stationers and manufacturers of account books, 24 and 25 Birchin Lane, Cornhill London. Is it too great a leap of faith to imagine George telling the promoters, start as you mean to go on, and providing the first book from his supplier in Burnley?
