Over the years I've not done so bad when it comes to working with computers, and most times I can eventually fix things up when it all goes pear-shaped.
Yesterday my Mac went not just pear-shaped but a complete fruit pudding with meringue and custard. Over the past few weeks it had been getting slower and slower until it said: "You know what? I can't be bothered anymore. I quit." And it did.
Fortunately there's a thing called Time Machine which regularly backs up the OS and all files to an external drive, so I wasn't too nonplussed.
Unfortunately my Mac refused even to start up. Missing its core thingies or something.
No probs - just re-install the OS from the original discs. Almost there - the discs were a bit out of date but I could easily update the version from the internet.
Went to restore all my settings, files, programmes, etc from Time Machine. Unfortunately my finely tuned and slimmed down original system had bloated by about 20GB when reinstalled - and my drive didn't have enough space on it to complete the job.
Grrr.
My backup drive (1TB capacity) is also getting full so it looks like I'm going to have to buy another to dump my data into, then give it all a good clean out.
On top of that, once you start messing with reinstallations, I find much of my work software needs reactivating from the software companies - it's going to take me absolutely ages to get back to where I was a few, happy and organised days ago.
I hate computers.

I'm the same Belle ... I "belong" to facebook and twitter* (MySpace is a waste of time now , but I still have a music page on there)....I get no spam.
I DO , however , get the ocassional bogus Ebay message that has details a bit too close to home on it , but I need to use Ebay...so I'm careful .
* I enjoy GuidoFawkes , Wossy and Queen_Uk......Brilliant (the latter)..oh and Stephenfry !

Belle, like you I don't have any major problems (probably a mistake saying that. Tempting fate!) and I often think that these things are all connected. The more active a person is online in the form of actual transactions, the more likely you are to be picked up. One of the things that strikes me about the money programmes is the number of times that someone with a major problem has just done something like changed an account or done something that needs a more than usually complicated response from a provider. My attitude towards thins like energy and ISP accounts is if it's working, leave it alone! I'm sure I could get a cheaper provider in the short term but at what cost in hassle?

Had an interesting problem a couple of days ago. I don't know whether updates have affected it but my mouse got so sensitive it was almost incontrollable. I like a fast response nrmally so I altered the settings to make it less sensitive. OK now. Question is am I getting older or is 64 bit too fast for me! I shall not go into a decline about it.
Message from Orange, thay are imroving the network and to expect an occasional drop out over next ten days which can be cured by restarting the router. No problems as yet and everything is running as fast as ever on the web.

What fun I've had this weekend.
Was under orders to sort out my office and make space for our new business, so after a big de-cluttering session I decided to set up my Big Mac, which I've been meaning to do for ages as my notebook Mac was groaning under the strain. I'd upgraded the Big Mac's RAM and installed a wi-fi dongle back in January but sheer laziness prevented me from swapping everything over.
All went well with the files transfer so I made the decision to upgrade to Snow Leopard while I was at it, which I knew was a bad idea and would end in tears.
It's now after 11pm and I've just about got it worked out - actually it wasn't too bad really. I lost internet capability at one point but somehow got it back - haven't a clue how. My main problem will be finding that many of the applications will need updating as I haven't really used this machine for a couple of years.
I also cleaned up my inkjet printer after discovering one of the cartridges had leaked everywhere and was the cause of very strange looking printouts. I'm a natural muck magnet and my hands got covered with Cyan but it was difficult to reach all the nooks and crannies. If I don't clean it properly the dried ink will block up the nozzles so I looked for a cleaning kit on tinterweb. One cost £79.99 and one cost £8.99. No guesses as to which one I ordered...

In teh bad old days of Windows 98 I often mused at the amount of time wasted keeping machines in order that were supposed to save time! (Fingers crossed!)

Have a look at this LINK for the Square Kilometre Array bid by Western Australia. Daughter Janet is working on the proposal and tells me that it will involve building the biggest computer yet to handle petabytes of data. (0ne petabyte = 1 million gygabytes) I think I want one!

Have a look at this LINK for the Raspberry Pi computer for less than £25. There was an item on World Service about it, they reckon it could be on the market in less than a year. Intended for schoolchildren to give them their own computer.

I see it uses a 700MHz ARM processor. Developed by Acorn Computers and now used in everything from mobile phones to vending and gaming machines. The Apple Iphone would not be here without the ARM.

It will probably do the intended job very well.
However, today's young 'uns are very style conscious and if it physically looks naff (which it does at present) then they won't use it, whatever the price.
Fact of life, I'm afraid.
Make it look like an iPad and it's a different story...

Big update for Ubuntu this morning. Looks like the whole OS. I've restarted and all seems well. I think of all those good people out there working for me. Wonderful!
PS. Ten minutes later and unless I'm very much mistaken I've gained speed. Whatever they did was good!

I sent this email to Orange this morning. Worth a punt I think. I'll let you know....
OS is Ubuntu 64bit. I am being bombarded with offers of cheaper broadband. I do not want to change. You recently reduced my speed from 20mb to 8mb (5mb actually). I do not want a package, I prefer to keep accounts separate. In view of the length of time I have been a customer, can I please have my broadband service for less money? Love, Stanley.

I have this package. Free calls after 6pm weekdays and all weekend, unlimited broadband and I get a discount for having an Orange mobile as well

How cheap are their calls to Australia? That's where I call most and is the reason I still have my calls with Talk Talk. I like their bills as well, every call itemised with all the details.
