Hi to Everyone,

I e-mailed Stanley and he was kind enough to point me in this direction. I am looking for any information on the Wilkinson family. This all started when a cousin gave my sister a card recording the burial of a Rycroft Wilkinson of Blera Side in August 1867. This card was in the possession of my grandmother who died in 1949. ( Grandfather died in 1947 ).

Well, to cut a long story short ( I know history is a long story !!! )  I have obtained the marriage certificate of a Joseph Wilkinson of Broach House who married  Caroline Harrison of  Noyna Hall on the 24th december 1837. On the marriage certificate it names Rycroft Wilkinson as Joseph's father, and a Joseph Harrison as Caroline's father. Under occupation Joseph and Caroline are Weavers (Rycroft was a Weaver and Joseph Harrison a Rougher ?).  Following this through in 1839  Joseph and Caroline had a son named Rycroft, born 6th July 1839 at this time they are living in Moss Houses ??. It is this Rycroft who I believe is on the memorial card., and who I believe is my Great Grandfather.

I have requested my grandfather's birth certificate from the CRO to see if Rycroft is named as his father.    Any information on Broach Houses , Noyna  or Moss Houses would be very much appreciated. I thank you for reading this,    great site for information.

Yours sincerely

Frank Wilkinson

ps Currently we live in Aberdeen so we can't  come down to Foulridge/Colne until March time, to investigate further.

Just had a look at a few ships passenger lists but there are loads of them - not easy if you don't know if or where they went.

They're pretty good aren't they....  Just heard a piece on R4 about the myth of Common Law Marriage.  The usual version is that it existed before the 1753 Marriage Act but was illegal after that.  An academic is on the verge of publishing research that changes this view as she reckons the 1753 Act was for a different purpose.  Keep your eyes peeled for the publication.

Good Morning,

You could have warned me that this family tree business drives you nuts !!!. I looked at the Lancashire County Council site for  Baptism, Marriages etc. in Colne, and I found more Wilkinson's than you could shake a stick at.

Woke this morning arond 5 am first thing that came to mind was 1837 Joseph married Caroline had Rycroft who married Elizabeth, who in turn married Richard.

So this morning I went out to the storage to wash the caravan ready for its outing to Lancashire/Yorkshire in the very near future

It is very additctive - and occupies most of your thoughts.  Trouble is when there are so many branches it becomes impossible to control - I keep nibbling away at one name, then go to another - sometimes details which weren't on a site suddenly appear at a later date - all due to things being entered all the time.

Good news is that the 1911 census is going to be released early.

http://www.ffhs.org.uk/news/news061213.php

Sad news is, 5% received water damage at some point and one renumeration district is missing.

The amount of Wilkinsons listed in the area over the years has been a constant source of challenge to disentangle them all.

Hi Frank,

I took a quick look and there was no immediate connection which jumped out.  Unfortunately for me, researching Brewis in Northumberland/Durham is very much like Wilkinson in Thornton/Colne area - not made any easier by the multiple use of the same first name and approximations of ages!  So, he will have to go on my list of "maybes".

Never thought I would be looking forward to retirement!!

Well done - if you have the certs. there can be very little doubt all is correct.   The James Ellis, witness to Carolines marriage crops up regularly on St. Bartholomews weddings as a witness - must have had something to do with the churches in Colne.
