INTERLUDE: A LIST OF WORKPEOPLE AT BANCROFT IN 1941

I will admit that unless one of your forbears is mentioned in this list it could be worth skipping. However, I suspect that many old Barlickers will get some pleasure out of this evidence that their ancestors existed and were recorded.

‘A list of workpeople employed by James Nutter and Sons Limited at Bancroft Shed, Barnoldswick on December 5th 1941.’ See Below for Big Kev's version of the list which is far easier to follow

Lovely stuff! I quite enjoyed transcribing that list because all the time my mind was working trying to guess which families they are related to in the Barlick of today. I hope that some of you found your grandparents.

Brilliant!!! Some names on here that I remember from the past, but just one question, where was 2 Mosley Street (Harry Brown, fireman)?

God knows, at 2 Mosley Street? Always bear in mind that even a list like this might contain transcription errors on the part of whoever transferred them by hand from the wages books. Glad you liked it, I love the fact that when it gets in the book it will trigger so many old Barlickers off. They have been recorded and published.

Mosley street is the street off Rainhall Rd opposite the old Weslyan School.

WISEMAN, Private, F, 203333. 1st/4th Bn. Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). 11th October 1918. Age 23. Son of William and Eliza Wiseman, of 9, Montrose Terrace, Barnoldswick. II. E. 1/10. and from the 1941 Bancroft list above

I'll have to dig deeper and find all the people who have lived there since it was built (1907).

What struck me was that addresses were given for the men but not the women.....  Bit of a sexist attitude there I think.  Odd lists like these are very often good sources for esoteric info about people not available anywhere else. The message is always cast the net wide! It's why my index can often throw up good stuff for genealogists because it comes to the subject by the back door as it were. Not constructed with genealogy in mind but general info on local history. Lateral thinking to search there for family history. That's why I have a trawl every now and again when there is a specific name request.

Oh my, I see my grandmother's name and my aunt's name on there. Edith Edmondson and Madge Edmondson. My mum worked there also but she's not on the list for that year.
