Recently the site has been targeted by numerous spammers and email harvesting robots, Some of you wil have received many of their emails offering long lost money, pledges and downright begging letters.
A lot of these were initially conducted by automatic email harvesting robots, who automatically registered as new members, thereby giving them access to the member listings. I stepped up the security on the registration page to overcome these robots, by requiring them to enter a return email address, before they could be accepted as a member. The robots are now history.
However, individuals from the Ivory coast, Samalia, Botswanna and other african countries are continuing to target the site and register as ligitimate members, again giving them access to the member list where they send individual Private messages using the sites software, luckily because this will be a manual process, only a few will recieve these messages.
I can step up the security another level (or 3), however the security process will reach a point where legitimate new members will be turned away because of the rigourous registration process, hence my reluctance to impliment the more secure method.
What I am asking is that you have patience with these troublesome annoying people and just delete their messages, if they do not get a response, then they will quickly ignore this site and move on.
In the last two months I have identified and banned more than 20 of these so-called members and will continue to do so, I am continually on the site throughout the day and patrol all new members and topics as they appear.
Don't give their messages the light of day, just delete them.
best regards

Running a PC without a firewall leaves you wide open to attack from Worms.

A worm is a self-propelled malicious program that scours the web seeking new victims - in the past this has been used to distinguish it from a virus that requires user action to compromise a machine.

Worms can infect and take over computers without any help, bar lax security, from a victim

Some worms and trojans can get past the ordinary virus scan.  There is a good free site called Trojan Scanner and it's worth running their check occasionally.  It takes a while to do especially when you have a lot of files but will identify some infections the others miss.  The crucial thing about all these scans is to use at least two, the databases and methods of scanning vary.  Firewalls are essential because you can block the ports that these rogue pings are looking for.  If you haven't got one operating you are floating in a colander.

My contact (like Mel) have been thru PRIVATE MESSAGES....however, (like Mel) my email address is hidden.

I could not log on to OG tonight thru my usual "favourites" button. Didn't get the home page....just a 'log in' reguest. Tried 4 times...no success.

Then went through GOOGLE and entered my usual Log In and was accepted. (got the home page this way too....very strange that I couldn't get it my regular way.)

You know the meaning of DISTRAUGHT of course, don't you? Maz...unable to Log On to OGFB. very distressing to be told your Log In is unacceptable! (when I can do it with me eyes shut normally!)

Jeez..... I swear I have only had one glass of the Cab Sav at this stage.

Busy server and brain fart I'll bet.....  Glad you got through.  It happened to me a few days ago, I just left it for an hour and tried again.

I gat them through PMs, plus email that has come through as message from oneguy etc,,,,. So surely if your email is hidden Mel it won't make any difference, you can still be emailed by accessing your profile

Oh I see. Mine comes as an email  with the garbage, but says its come from oneguy. Anyway I don't even read it, just delete now with all the other garbage I get. I have  just changed my email address as I was getting about 170 emails a day that were garbage/adverts etc. Now I get about 4 a week. But it has been arduous changing my address on everything I was registered on. I keep the other email active at the moment just in case some one contacts me, that I missed. The garbage is still coming!!!

I don't get ANY garbage Emails.....be careful who you give your Email address out to! It would be like being hassled by teli-marketers to have so many rubbish emails every day! I have much better ways to spend my time than pushing DELETE all day, quite frankly.

I've never hidden my email address and only get about 30 spam a day, almost all of which are caught by my system.  I put this down to not opening any of them, and not using the preview window.

I normally only get two or three rogue emails a day which yahoo puts into my bulk box.  I normally just delete them, but if I don't, then yahoo will automatically delete them within a month.  I do check my bulk box tho because a couple of times a normal email has slipped in.

I think my email address has been picked up on genealogy message boards. I too am not in the habit of opening them. Its the subtle ones that mange to get opened., that is why I think they have been picked up on genealogy sites, for the opening phrase. The recent spammers from one guy, came through as message from oneguy...... I have been in the habit of clicking on those as a short cut to the site.  Anyway, as I say, a successful change of address some months ago has solved the problem.  My old address I felt gave too much away about me, the new one is more subtle. Sue is a very common name, and many of the spams that came through involved the word Sue.
