Some wonderful efforts so far...
You have my interest now, so I have just printed the pic out and will have a think about it. Whilst it makes a lovely photo, I am not keen on it as a subject for painting (too many dark gloomy colours and that stark white rattles me somewhat). Each to his own I suppose! Forgive my opinion. I would have preferred a lovely, leafy English lane or something. Not that I haven't enjoyed many walks along canals.
Just have to check my acrylics aren't clagged from this latest heatwave we have had. If they are, I am down to pastels and watercolour pencils. (or perhaps a very wierd combination of both). Whatever I manage will serve as an excellent example of how NOT to paint, but I will have fun doing it.

Maz, I do tend to agree with you that what makes a good photo is not always a good subject to paint. But remember "artistic license"... introduce some colour to the sky and hence the reflection and also some variation to the stone colour of the bridge and then you have a brighter subject with fewer stark contrasts. Mine's started and hopefully I'll find some time and space to do a bit more this afternoon. Nolic

Well the colours are all very different in the UK anyway Nolic. Very different greens from Australia....we go from lush, tropical greens near the coast to grey-greens inland. Our sunrises and sunsets are quite vivid. We don't 'do' grey here! (just preparing you in case you don't recognise my efforts as springing from the original pic I guess.)
Plus, to be honest, the print out I did of the subject picture is not good. Should have taken the time to load photo paper.
But I have managed to wrestle my acrylics from my craft cupboard. They are in a box, but I haven't had time to take the lid off the darn box to investigate yet. (Febby home on holidays....he is like a caged tiger...we are in and out doing stuff all day. I may have to slip him a sleeping pill....)

I thought it was a good photo because of the almost perfect reflection . It may have appeared dark but that doesn't take anything away from the reflection and the wonderful perspective tthrough to the second bridge. As for the painting , surely the photo is only there for inspiration . If you want a green leafy picture then make it one. Canals are just as typical as leafy lanes and there are plenty of trees and greenery on the opicture if you want to use it.

I liked the picture because it represented a challenge to me. Nearly every class I go to concentrates on lanes,  cottages and trees. I have never painted a stone bridge before like this, I have never tried to tackle the perspective issues. I have done water many times but this was a challenge to show the relection as a perfect reflection , and an opportunity to try different ways of showing relection . In fact I have already had one useful hint from another site, saying that my reflection should have been darker than the non reflected parts.

The picture can be changed endlessly. Change the way the bridge is painted . ie my way showing every stone or just give the effect of stonework.  Lighten or darken the stonework . Lighten or darken the sky . Make it a gloomy winters day or a sunny one. I tried to show sunrise witha wzrm yellow glow. I had actually only used cheap paer to do the picture and it had a grey tinge which masked the blue and the yellow I used.  Yesterday I was even tempted to make it a snow scene. the possibilities are endless.

What I like about doing these pictures at Christmas are to see the way different people tackle the task . The first year, Sun over Kelbrook , I was in my painting infancy and did a picture just like the photo. It took 4 attempts , and at the end Icould do a pretty good hazy moon and graduated wash.   Last year we tried a building , The Old Boathouse. What a challenge that was to me. It took endless attempts. I changed the picture slightly but I learned how to do a roof. This year my painting was completed at its   first attempt, the drawing was my second.( although it was my first drawing of the scene and the very first time I had drawn anything other than an orange, or a wine glass or any of the other simple drawing exercises .) You see this year I am trying to teach myself to draw and this photo allowed me to have a go

So I hope the rest of you get the same enjoyment and challenge out of this years painting, and perhaps next year we can do something different again .  It makes me practice.

 Sue

Thanks for that tip Sue, I will try using the clingfilm as suggested.

Agree with everything you and Nolic say about using a photo for inspiration, most of my paintings are from photos as the scenes that I like to paint are no longer there and I have no choice.
But I always introduce a bit of artistic licence into a painting otherwise it rarely looks right.
I was recently watching Keith Fenwick painting on TV and he painted the first scene, which was winter then simply introduced warmer colours and created a summer scene.
Just out of interest, does anyone know of cheaper oil paints than those on the SAA website.
I am paying £5-70 for a 37ml tube of W&N Artist grade paint...

On another point, is there any reason why we can't do a painting every couple of months for instance, it seems a shame only to do one a year.....

I always think the SAA comes out cheapest for most things. However RANGE sells paints cheaply but I don, know about their oils. Also Boundary mill. There is a mail order warehouse in Kendal that also sells paints. I will look up its website for you

Thanks Sue, will have a look at Range and Boundary Mill, I have bought watercolours from both places but never bothered about the oils till now.

SAA usually comes out tops, so convenient with free postage and loyalty points as well.

Boundary Mill is generally expensive. I havn't come accross Range and I generally find SAA good value. Have you tried Ken Bromley's? If you get on their mailing list they tell you of upcoming special offers such as this one with W nad N oils from £4.22. Nolic

Range is in Rochdale, but I think it is a chain of stores scattered about. It sells everything for Art and Craft and other things besides, including things you didn't know you wanted . I have just remebered there is also the Craft store opposite the station at Ramsbottom . Is it called Clarks, but I think that is expensive too

That is an excellent site, Nolic and some real bargains, the W&N oil offer is very good and beats the SAA on this occasion.
