Valley Gardens is a small local park on Gisburn Road in Barnoldswick. It is close to the centre of the town and has pleasant wooded walkways along the side of Butts Beck.

Valley Gardens was once just another small open space. Then, with the superb activities of a local businesswoman together with enthusiastic members of the public, the park was transformed into the exciting green-space we have today.

Beginning in 1998, the active Valley Gardens Working Group soon cleaned up the park. An educational arboretum was planted, a pond dipping area was created and interesting tree logs (to show young children how trees grow) were added. Youngsters can play in the nearby playground or on the new Pirate Ship.

The future of Valley Gardens is bright with the possibility of future fairs and events supported by the Working Group and local schools. Valley Gardens stands as a proud example of the Council and the public working together to make things better.

Valley Gardens is situated on Gisburn Road (B 6251).

Many, many moons ago, me and my mate Bryan used to play in and around the beck before it was tidied up and made pretty.

We would dam up a section, or fish for tiddlers, or explore the area under the Gisburn Rd bridge and generally have a brilliant time because it was pretty wild and exciting.

I once found a huge (well, I was only 8 years old) rainbow trout trapped in a rock pool which someone was obviously keeping fresh because it was gone after a few days.

Now of course the beck is fenced off and everything is landscaped. I suppose it's an improvement, but thank goodness I'm of the generation that was still allowed to use our imagination and discover excitement from simple activities. Valley Gardens today is pleasant. To an eight year old in the Sixties it would have been utterly boring.

Dangerous? Maybe. But that's how I learned my sense of self-preservation which has kept me out of other dangers (so far... !!!)

Someone once told me abbout going under the bridge and climbing on the sewer pipe that used to be there. While they were perched up there someone must have opened the clow on one of the mill dams and they had an uncomfortable twenty minutes as the water rushed by underneath them.

You can still get to the beck if you walk on the right side of it - there's no fence on the side with no playground.

I would have been in like Flynn by now if I were 8 years old!

Sewer pipe? Ah.

I once left home (like you do when your parents are being awkward) but made sure I had a good stock of food for the journey - i.e. half a dozen Grandma Sheldrick's Nutties.

I got as far as the Gisburn Rd bridge (ooh, a good 2 minute walk, at least) then, as fatigue had kicked in, sat down on the large, rust coloured pipe under the bridge to eat my scran.

In fact, that pipe played rather a large role in my upbringing - it was at various times a horse, a WWII tank and good hiding place.

I didn't know it was a sewer pipe, and now I feel rather ill at the thought!

However, being in close proximity to a sewer pipe doesn't do shellfish any harm, so I guess it didn't do a Sheldrick any harm either.

You seem to have survived but perhaps it was crouching under that bridge that made you vertically challenged.......

Being 5' 1" does have many advantages. A small person can always get a ladder or a tall person to reach things for them, but a tall person can't wriggle into small places when necessary. The ability to do this has got me out of one or two scrapes in the past

I haven't looked under the bridge lately but it seemed huge when I was 8 and even shorter than I am now.

Callunna...Hi, I'm 5'1" too. How many times have you had to ask for help in the supermarket to get something from the 'high' shelve, or only dusted to your own eye level, and then been concerned when someone 'tall' visits, how many hems have you taken up, or not been able to reach the centre of your car roof when cleaning it? ha ha. I for one 'don't care' - good things come in small packages I say!!

All thru the fields and meadows gay  ....  Enjoy

5' 1" - I reckon it's the best height to be.

OK, you have trouble finding flared jeans that don't lose their flare once you've hacked several inches of the legs, but the main advantage is that you tend to get overlooked - literally - as you stand at a crowded bar to get your round in. As you can't seem to get served, you return to your gang with a mournful expression, and somebody taller than you offers to do the honours instead. Nowadays I skip the preliminaries and just point out that it would be much quicker if someone else went to the bar. Saved me a fortune over the years...

Let's have two choruses of Rabbdy Newman's 'Short people' and then reflect on the fact that Napoleon was a short-arse.

Allan Lad was one as well, they had to dig trenches for his leading ladies to walk in....
