Following the recent discussion about chippies in Barlick, I was wondering whether there's merit in creating a new Forum for reviews of local eating out places? And pubs? This would benefit newcomers/visitors as well as locals. I would be happy to write reviews of the local restaurants and pubs - a tedious and arduous task but someone's gotta do it The beauty of a website like OGFB is that several people could comment on the same place - one person's meat is another person's poison - so the reader would get a fair and balanced idea, unlike newspaper reviews which depend on the mood of the reviewer on just one occasion.

I dont know if I have told you this already, but I went to the Fence Gate just over 2 weeks ago and I have to say it was absolutely FANTASTIC!!!
Better than the Bayhorse - and that was one of my favourites. Although I believe that the Bayhorse has now been taken over.
At the Fence Gate both the food and the service was brilliant. I had Scallops with Blackpudding for starter and my mum had soup, I had Lamb for my main with Mash with Leeks. Mum had a speciality Sausage with Chunky Chips. We both then had a Chocolate Pudding that when you broke into it Chocolate oozed out, this was with homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and Shortbread/Brandy Snap. I cant compliment it enough, although I have to say I couldnt move after all that. If I had to find any fault it is a little expensive.
Well worth a visit.

Not strictly eating out but Ian's post about Mario's reminded me. Mrs Nolic and the tribe had Pizza's from a new Italian Takeaway Bella Pizza Pasta on Scotland Road Nelson. Said they were the best pizza's ever. Very fresh and tasty and a bottle of wine thrown in. Nolic

Had fish and chips at the Sparrow Hawk, Wheatley Lane a couple of weeks ago - superb - more like a whale on a plate - lovely white flaky fish and fat chips.
Say only a little but say it well |

Just returned from yet another great meal at Abbot's Harbour. On this occasion it was E's Big 5-0 birthday celebration and we took over the upstairs room. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and everyone enjoyed their food immensely. Total cost for food & drinks was just short of £170 - not bad for 14 people! Well worth a visit - even if you only pop in for a cuppa after walking the towpath from Greenberfield to East Marton. |

By road, take the Bank Newton lane which runs down the side of the Cross Keys pub on the A59 at East Marton. It's about half a mile if that. Good car parking next to the stables.By foot, bike or boat, follow the towpath from Greenberfield Locks for about three quarters of an hour at a gentle stroll. Abbots Harbour

As I've just done the pictures for Mario's new website, I thought I'd post the link on here.Midweek deals are still as good as ever me and P had 2 courses each, last night, 2 pints of draught Peroni each and coffee and biscuits, all for £33. You can't knock that......

I envy you guys in Barlick. It''s nice to have a good Fish & Chip shop close by. In Chicago, I have to drive a long distance to taste Fish & Chips tasting no way close to the ones you enjoy in Barlick. Perhaps I'll visit Barlick in the spring of next year...I can almost smell the Fish & Chips now :) Enjoy!
