Admergill is listed as a farm house in twp of Brogden, county York. This is just a bit outside of Barrowford..above Blacko
From..A History of the County of Lancashire, Vol. 6. The Commissioners for deforesting in 1507 found that Over Barrowford had been let to farm at 4 pounds, Nether Barrowford with a parcel adjoing called Riston Thorns at 4 pounds and they granted them to the old tenants for Copyhold rents amounty to 12 pounds in all. The rental in 1527 shows that there were 19 seperate tenaments farmed, occupied by John Hayke, Lawrence Gargreaves, Bernard Hartly and others. The principal tenants in 1609 were Lawrence Townley of Carr, John Hartley of Admergill, John Hargreaves and Lawrence Hartley of Carr Mills..

Here are a few bits that may be relevant. I would be interested to know if this family of John Hartley at Admergill spring from Bernard Hartley of Blacko and Laund. A Bernard H was one of the first copyholders of land in Blacko, he certainly held land there in 1507. I have quite a bit on his family but have not included them here.
This reply will seem a touch disjointed but it has been assembled from a number of different files.
1561 John Hartley of admergill surrenders a parcel in and upon Blacko at 4s 8d ( I estimate this at 14 acres).
1562 John and Richard Hartley are appointed "Fence-lookers" in Roughlee.
1583 Interrogatorie: James Robinson stated 80 states that in 1523 the tenants of Barrowford exchanged lands with tenants of Blacko. Lawrence Hartley of Barrowford exchanged with James Hartley of Blacko and that Blacko in Barrowford joins another parcel called Blacko in Admergill and that a ditch divides the said grounds. Also the deposition of John Hartley, aged 76, of Cotes in Craven is taken. He states that his own father, Bernard Hartley was one of the first to take vaccarries from the King's Commissioners by Court Roll (this would be in1507).
1608 John Hartley pays £1:9:6 for rent of Admergill
1662 William Hartley of Admergill is mentioned in a land surrender
1662 John Hartley pays 15s:9d for his property in Roughlee (probably the Hall).
1561 John Hartley of Admergill surrenders one parcel of land in and upon Blacko at 4s 8d to the use of Hugh Wilkinson, Jenett his wife and Elizabeth his daughter, and survivor, to the use of the following shall pay the Queen's rent and 14s to John Hartley, his heirs and assigns and 1 day of shearing, 1 day of turves drawing and 1 day of hay making.
1558 Richard Bancroft, Greave of Pendle Forest, surrenders 1 messuage in Fence at 10s to John Hartley of Admergill, Richard Hartley of Langroyde, Hugh Moor (son of Richard) and William Hargreaves of Higham - a Christopher Moor is a yeoman of Dean Bottom (this was on the north side of the pasture then in the tenure of James Hargreaves).
1557 William Lister of York allowed Richard Aicroyde of Briercliffe (this would be Foulds House) to use land in Colne rented by John Hartley. Richard Aicroyde then purchased the land but had to allow John Hartley the use of it for the term of his life.
1555 Henry Bannester of Parkhill and James Hartley of Blacko fined 12d each for keeping an unruly tenant in John Robinson alias Bewse who with his dogs drove away his neighbour's beasts.
1540 Robert Hartley was named Pynus. Richard Hartley was called Little Hodge. John Hartley was called Hoydye.
1540 John Hartley and Bernard Hartley complain against Robert Blakey in a plea of trespass for open fences between Juddefield and the Long Rodes upon a dyke called Le Blacke Dyke. Jury award damages.
1539 James Hartley of Fulshaw served on a jury.
1531 John Hartley, alias Goosecombe, sues John Robinson jnr of Black Moss for debt.
1531 Miles Nutter (father-in-law of 'witch' Alice Nutter) sues John Hartley, William Mitton for debt.
1527 The jury declare that a messuage and other buildings at 22s 2.5d pa rent in Roughlee reverted to the King upon the death of Henry Hartley and that John Hartley is his son and heir and 16 years of age or more and that Lawrence Hargreaves is his uncle to the said John and agrees to be his guardian until he attains maturity. Margery Hartley (widow of Henry) forbade fine for her dower and Henry Mitton forbade fine until the said John Hartley should fulfil the intention of the said will of his father.
1524 Richard Tattersall plaintiff against John Hartley of Admergill for ocupying several parcels of land in Barrowford. Jury says that the plaintiff shall have a way leading out of a close called Witley (Wheatley) for 2 years to come without interruption.
1524 Richard Tattersall plaintiff aginst John Hartley of Admergill in a plea of trespass for the occupation of certain parcel of land lying in Wittawbothe (Whitehough) against Robert Lee (I think this Le was R.Lee, Knight, Commissioner of the Royal Forest in 1507). Plaintiff wins 10s damages.

John Hartley of Admergill married Ellen Hartley of Roughlee Hall in 1663
Ellen was the daughter of James Hartley of Roughlee Hall who inherited Dimpenley estate and moved there. James was son of Margaret Smith, of Roughlee Hall and Hugh Hartley, yeoman of Winewall. Margarets father, John Smith is thought to have built Roughlee Hall in the later 16thc, he married Alice Shawe, daughter of Henry Shawe of Newsome, later of Blacko and Alkincoates. Alice was widowed in 1669 and later married a Slater.

The property auction was held by Mr. Waddilove at £120.00. This is most likely Thomas Waddilove who jointly occupied numbers 16 and 18 Gisburn Road Blacko in 1896, 1899, 1902 and 1905 William Thompson, Grocer and Postmaster, was the other party. In 1937 William Henry Walton, the Landlord of the Sun Inn, lived at number 16. In 1908 these houses were listed as empty. The house and buildings have recently (1896) been entirely rebuilt at considerable cost and upon the most modern principles. The estate map accompanying the sale does not include what is now called Admergill Hall - this belonged to the Trustees of Ms. Weldon.

Whittaker states in History of Whalley that:
"Admergill , which is one of the boundaries of the parish towards Barnoldswick , is undoubtably called Ald, Mere-gill, the Gill, or Gully, which formed the old boundary. Here were lately (1802) found 117 pennies of Edward 1st and John Baliol, King of Scotland".

At this point I have no clue where or who these Hartleys came from or belong to. Your information is a bit mid boggling at the moment. Presently know Fulshaw and Admergill. Much work to do!
Someone mentioned on this site there were old wills for the Hartleys...I have posted 1 of them but wonder about others. When I was in England I never suspected these Hartleys would be found in York information so never researched any of that area as I only knew of Fulshaw farm in Barrowford from my grandfather, John Smith, who drilled that place name into my brain. Bad ME!

I will have a look at Doreen Crowther's work on these Hartleys at Colne library. There appeared to be 3 distinct families in the Blacko area by the early 16th century. There are a number of wills for the extended family, a few appertain to Fulshaw.
As Fulshaw is just out of my limits for this research I haven't much on the Hartleys from there. I do know that the Clitheroe Court Rolls have quite a bit of information on the Fulshaw families.
A reference by Sarah Pearson states that: after description of house plan at Lower Fulshaw or Pasture.....early 18th c date suggested......Bernard Sutcliffe, yeoman, who probably built the house had a son Bernard who died in 1674: his sister Margaret died 1722 and inherited Pasture: she married Henry Rycroft who died in 1710. The farm was variously called Fulshaw, Pasture and Rycroft's farm:.....Doreen Crowther has deposited work on this at Pendle Heritage Centre....... identification of details from three wills all of which list inventories Par.Reg. and 1803 Survey of Barrowford.
Your interest here crossess with those of Melteaser (a fellow member of OGFB)who is related to the Sutcliffes of Fulshaw.
The Admergill area has long fascinated me. On the 1581 map of the area (see Stanley's post via a search for Barlick versus Foulridge) there are 5 houses there. There was a mill at Admergill, used for woollen production in the 18th c on. I am not sure if this was originally a corn mill, there are rack stones in the field walls indicating a corn mill, or malt kiln, site. There is also the site of a large circular tower of uncertain date.Slightly up the stream are the remains of some kind of water-driven workshop. At present there is one main "Hall" at Lower Admergill, the old "Monastry" building having been destroyed. There are also a couple of later houses in the valley

No doubt in my mind that James Hartley of Admergill was brother to my John Hartley (who died 1799 and predeceases the brother James) of Fulshaw as so stated in the will of James of Admergill where he leaves an inheritance to his nephew James Hartley of Fulshaw.
The Fulshaw Hartley's lived Upper Fulshaw Farm.
I sure do hate living 3000 miles away from easy research sources but will do the best I can from here.

Betsy, you wouldn't be much better off if you were here. Hartley is such a common name, I always feel sorry for anyone researching them, almost as bad as Smith..... Someone once told me they have an annual convention in the States and thousands of Hartley's attend. Fancy doing the hotel bookings for that lot, how do they differentiate them?

was informed that the Hartley's of Admergill were quite easy to research because of the geographical location of this area.
Has anyone heard of the Hartley Library at Southampton University? I understand it has Admergill information, but one has to visit the library archives in person to view any documents. Surely, there must be another way?
I would be very interested to hear from anyone with an Admergill connection. Email address ossystuart@aol.com

Hello Betsy - did you ever get anyone to look at those files in Southampton?
I have g.g.g.grandmother, Ellen HARTLEY, seems born in Barrowford. No father named on marriage certificate so is a total BRICKWALL. Would seem they are somehow connected to Blacko area though.
Would be interested to hear if anything more was found.

ok...dont have the copies yet but I do have the information that is included on each of the 20 pages...thought I'd post that to get you all in gear for what is to come! I'd say it's going to tie a ton of Hartleys together, add the names of wives, and heaven only knows what else! The person who is gathering the file had to submit a request to the library for copies of all the pages and as soon as he gets them he'll scan and send to me..and you can be assured I'll transcribe them page by page and line by line for all of you to see and digest.
1) This was a small-ish card that had the following on it
William Hartley of Roughlee & Admergill
1667 – 1730
|
Henry Robinson of Padiham
|
John Hartley of
Roughlee and Lower Craggs
m. 1690-1739

2) This was a family tree, very detailed, tiny writing. Titled Hartley’s of Admergill
At the top was Alexander who died in 1563
3) This was another page of tree in 2)
4) This was a card with a list of wills, there were no wills in the file so it may be that it’s no use, or that the wills are elsewhere. The dates I presume are for when the wills were signed or something, there was no definite indication of what they were.
“ Copies & Transcriptions of Wills
John Hartley of Admergill 1/1/1662
Margaret Hartley of Admergill 26/9/1627

George Hartley of Overhouses 14/11/1768
Nathaniel Hartley 20/1/1773
James Hartley of Lower Admiregale 9/6/1800”
5) This was more family tree, entitled Hartley of Admergill p4 of(what I think said) Pence Gate
It started with George born in 1695 2nd son of Hartley of Roughlee, formerly of Admergill and went through about 3-4 generations down to May 9/Aug/1907, Susan Moon 1889 and Christopher 22/8/1886
6) This was another page that looked similar to 2) Someone had been through in pencil underlining names, it looked like the male line:
7) Alexander 31/7/1670 -> John 20/5/1705 -> George 28/5/1727
-> James -> May 1.8.90 -> James
8) This had more tree;

9) More tree
10) More tree
11) More tree
12) This was yet more family tree, titled Admergill of Fulshaw, the latest date I could see was of Joseph Hartley 3/11/1876

All good info and it will be of use to someone. Never forget that the Google bots pick up all these references and make them accessible world-wide. Every post is a public service, Pyramid Goodwill. All I would say to anyone using the info is that it would be nice if you registered and made your research available in the same way. This doesn't diminish your work and ensures a greater chance of others posting.
