In view of the worsening relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom, the way that the UK has been treated by the Brussels-based Eurocrats, and their interference with the dimensions and shape of our fruit and vegetables, I propose that we should re-name the `Brussels' sprout as from 1st January 2012.
I've started this thread to give OGFB members the opportunity to suggest alternative names. I know how creative you are and that you like a challenge, so let's see what you can come up with!

Thanks Tizer. A few weeks ago Headstone hunting at Ghyll church, a few of us re-convened at the Rolls Royce Welfare Club and I met someone whom I had not seen for many years. Colin, used to be my best barman when I was Steward of a local club, Sunday evenings would see him looking after the downstairs bar, he would suddenly go rigid and adopt a strange expression, then he would relax and smile. Within seconds the entire bar area would clear of customers, yes, he had had sprouts with his dinner, "If you all breathe in at once, it will soon go" was his usual comment. Biological weapon of mass discomfort! sulphurous in content and not to be forgotten quickly, or in my case, the first thing I thought of when I saw him!!!!

I blanch mine, then fry them in a little butter with garlic and crispy bacon lardons - dont' seem to have a windy effect this way!

From the mouth-watering culinary descriptions above I think we Brits know a lot more about cooking sprouts than do those Frenchies and Neurozone folk.

How right you are Tizer, and its not just sprouts. According to many and the French and Italians in particular, we Brits know nothing about food and are unsanitary culinary morons. Nouveau Cuisine came out of Europe, I am not sure what they think it means, but I see it as "Miniscule Table Decoration on Large Plate" Two years ago I game back from Italy safe in the knowledge that both my Wife and I can produce a better Spag Bol or Lasagna and our soup does not resemble left over vegetable parts floating in the dishwater. Due to the reluctance of a lot of Europeans to buy British Beef or Beef of a similar quality, one often finds that their alternative may look fine but, does not compare well in any other respect, much of it being "Corn fed". If you tell people often enough and for long enough that their culinary product does not compare with your own, they and others start to believe it. The French are inclined to believe that they are the best in all manner of things, conveniently forgetting Waterloo and Trafalgar plus many other episodes. I have been in French toilets that would get effinsafety very excited. My No1 European country for all round cleanliness, efficiency and general good hospitality would have to be Sweden, I have never been anywhere that is so clean.

I have found that the way to reduce/eliminate the problem is to NOT cut the traditional cross into the base of the sprout "to help them cook". Also avoid large sprouts. The smaller ones are more "fiddley" to prepare but the flavour is infinitely better.
As far as a new name for them is concerned I am trying to think which of the boring old fart I know is worthy of having his name perpetuated by renaming sprouts in his honour. Most boring old farts have little or none of this.

If you could take the time to GM modify , or long breeding program , to cross Red Cabbage with Brussel Sprouts you could truly come up with a new name ( Of sourse purple sprouting is somethink else so you cannot use that )
The Views above may or may not be true , I may or may not agree with them. |
