The somewhat blurred photo below is of my father Frank Harrison....behind him are his cousin Jack Simpson being held by aunt Bell Simpson - wife of William Simpson who had the Butcher's shop in Park Road, Barlick.
Can you identify the building in the background which has a sign saying "Binns.....House"
By the time I was born in 1945 the Simpsons all lived in Park Road..

I find that very sad....having to wear your school blazer all year round. We sometimes go to a city park for a walk....very close to a toffee private school.....and I find it really sad to see the children who board there having a Sunday visit from Mum and Dad and walking around in full school uniform. So what if Mumsy and Dadsy are paying squillions for the top boarding school. The kids should be running about getting filthy! (and all that money should provide play clothes...)

When I was a nipper I had a blazer similar to the one in the pic. It wasn't a formal school jacket merely a style for children and the badge was meaningless. Nolic

I suppose if parents had forked out for a school uniform in my day they did not have any money left for 'fancy' clothes.

Morning Maz..... Same here and it got to the point where my play clothes were actually in better nick than my school uniform. There were a lot of well-heeled kids at the Grammar School and I remember getting a lot of stick because I was so shabby. My parents couldn't afford to do any better. You could only get the school uniform at one shop and it was very expensive.
By the way, excitement this morning as daughter Janet is just taking off from Sydney in a great white bird as I write. She will be in London tomorrow at 7am and is visiting the rainy North 16/19 May so I get to give her a big hug! Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope you have a good time Stan Lee.
My parents bought my uniform a couple of sizes too big so I would grow into it. The trouble is that from 11 when I got the uniform to 16 when I took it off for the last time, the blazer sleeves still covered my hands, the skirt still needed rolling over at the top to take up the slack and the coat had enough room in it for half of the fifth form. It took me 35 years to wear brown with confidence again!
Measure with a micrometer.
Mark with a pencil.

There have of course been some other Binns in Barlick. Tom Binns and his wife (whose name escapes me) lived down Butts on the right, with their son John. They were very active in the Gospel Mission Hall (down Valley Gardens went I went), and Tom used to do Sunday School there now and again. Unfortunately, his attempt to instill religious instruction into us, floundered when he let slip he fought Germans in the war, and so all we were bothered about at that age was how many he had killed!

Par for the course at that age Richard. I was always glued to the woreless at night listening to the lists of bombing raids. For years I wondered where this place Marshalling Yards was and why it got bombed so much. Bit like the old army order, 'Fire at Will'.
