Hi to Everyone,

I e-mailed Stanley and he was kind enough to point me in this direction. I am looking for any information on the Wilkinson family. This all started when a cousin gave my sister a card recording the burial of a Rycroft Wilkinson of Blera Side in August 1867. This card was in the possession of my grandmother who died in 1949. ( Grandfather died in 1947 ).

Well, to cut a long story short ( I know history is a long story !!! )  I have obtained the marriage certificate of a Joseph Wilkinson of Broach House who married  Caroline Harrison of  Noyna Hall on the 24th december 1837. On the marriage certificate it names Rycroft Wilkinson as Joseph's father, and a Joseph Harrison as Caroline's father. Under occupation Joseph and Caroline are Weavers (Rycroft was a Weaver and Joseph Harrison a Rougher ?).  Following this through in 1839  Joseph and Caroline had a son named Rycroft, born 6th July 1839 at this time they are living in Moss Houses ??. It is this Rycroft who I believe is on the memorial card., and who I believe is my Great Grandfather.

I have requested my grandfather's birth certificate from the CRO to see if Rycroft is named as his father.    Any information on Broach Houses , Noyna  or Moss Houses would be very much appreciated. I thank you for reading this,    great site for information.

Yours sincerely

Frank Wilkinson

ps Currently we live in Aberdeen so we can't  come down to Foulridge/Colne until March time, to investigate further.

Gloria you are forgiven a 1000 times over and more !!!. I had found this census information, but to have confirmation is wonderful.

It looks ever more likely that Ryecroft died in 1867. The Redehough have come up a few times in the limited research I have carried out, but sometimes I find them as Riddihough and other times as Redehough it does look like the same family  though!!!

I am now awaiting the twins Caroline and Mary's Birth Certificates to see who are the parents. Also I should have Joseph Wilkinson's  Birth Certificate he was born in Harden in 1866 some time tlater his week. Hopefully this will help either to put them to rest or to follow the trail further !!!. As you can see I'm new to all this and any pointers as to direction is very much appreciated.

Regards

Frank Wilkinson

Just a quick question for anyone

I can't find Joseph Wilkinson !!!   who married Caroline  Harrison 24th December 1837 in the Parochial Chapel in Colne. I know this took place because I have the certificate on it which states Rycroft Wilkinson as Josephs father. On any census record I can't find Joseph living with Rycroft Wilkinson. Question is how can I check this. I have tried  the BMDs from around this period but it does not come up with anyone. Is it to soon for Goverment records ??, if it is how do I check parish records etc ??

best regards

Frank Wilkinson

Hello Frank,

I seem to remember MrsWilkinson had a little shop on Bents in the 1950s.

My grandparents  Albert and Martha Ellen  Hartley lived at "Overdene" at the top of Bent Lane  until 1941and my great uncle Walter Hartley lived next door at "High Bank"until the early sixties.

Yes she has but, he was married then .  I was looking for him prior to being married when he should have been living with Ryecroft senior. It looks like he was born around 1817 ??.

Frank, you will be lucky to find an earlier census. A few places have them for 1821 but they are few and far between.

Hi All,

After receiving Rycrofts Death Certificate I have been speaking with the Northern Mining Society at Keighley. They don't have any record of the Accident, but they do have a history of this mine. I don't know if it will be of use to anyone else tracing local mining events, but here is the web page etc.

He has given me a lot of information on the mine at Lothersdale and he is going to send me a history of the mine etc. In return I will send them a copy of the death certificate so they have it in the Lothersdale mine file.
