According to this weeks BET, there is a proposal by Maple Grove Developments (Preston) to create a Supermarket and Car Parking for 275 cars on the current Carlson Filtration site at Butts. Apparently, plans are already underway to create a new food store and car park. The plans are at an early stage and rest on obtaining planning permission and a successful re-location of the Carlson Filtration operations.
You can read the article in the Barnoldswick and Earby Times (BET) and comment on the article here:
www.pendletoday.co.uk
The development company is holding an exhibition of the proposed plans on Wednesday 30th Jan 2008 at the Rainhall Centre from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.
Good or bad idea, discuss..

The town poll is on Thursday 10th April. There will be no polling cards issued, residents should vote at their normal polling stations. Voting hours are restricted, 4pm to 9pm. I'll stick it on the calendar.

I'll be there. I suggest we all make an effort and tell our friends.

I'll be on my way to the Isle of Wight. Can I vote by proxy?

It doesn't matter who you vote for, you always end up with the government. |

One thing to watch for, I notice from the polling card I have received for the upcoming Local elections in May that my usual polling station has changed from the Butts Clinic to the Independent Methodists Chapel on Walmsgate. The article in the BET for the town poll says to vote at your normal polling station. Fine and dandy if I knew which one they meant, The Clinic is normal for me, or has been for the last 20 years, without a polling card it could be a tad confusing for some folk. I will swing past the Clinic just to be on the safe side come Thursday.

Intersting you should say that, just looked at my polling card for May and I am in the Rainhall Centre now. I'd never looked, I would just have swanned off to the Liberal Club.

Hi Tim, If you look on page 4 of this thread there is a map of the local area where they are planning to build the supermarket. To sum up the problems, the site is surrounded by residential, is adjacent to a conservation area and heritage trail, has limited narrow access from the town centre which may encourage rat runs and the traffic proposals in my view will cause more problems than they fix. Barnoldswick already has two small supermarkets and a lively town centre with small shops which will take the brunt if this proposal goes through. Lots more depth earlier in the thread, thanks for your interest, all comments are welcome.

Welcome Tim and no need to apologise for not being in the town. A lot of us recently signed a petition against a planning decision in Norfolk so you can see we aren't parochial! Ian is exactly right, this is a planning proposal driven entirely by the prospect of profit with the 'facts' being bent to support the application. Barlick is largely unspoilt and if this development is allowed it will be a disaster for the town centre. Apart from the dangers from the development, what nobody has mentioned is that the site is the natural confluence of the two major drainage channels running through the town and in 1932 it was hit by a disastrous flood. None of the culverts and drains involved have been altered since then. The flood was what the water authorities would regard as a 'fifty year event'. So if I was an investor I would be reading the history books........

Sorry ive not been on for awhile but i move around alot and sometimes dont have a internet connection. Its great to see everybody putting the argument against the superstore. I hope people turn out for the poll even if it won't mean anything official, however it will show the planners that we wont take this rubbish lying down. |

Darn - I had forgotten.
Don't think I'll be able to get all the way down to St Joseph's because I'll be on foot and I have too much work to get through. I WILL try... |

Twenty minutes later and the deed is done (emptied Jack at the same time) However! And it's a big however.... they have got the question wrong. The question on the voting slip is 'Do the people of Barnoldswick support the supermarket proposal' I pointed out to the ladies that I couldn't possibly give an opinion for the rest of Barnoldswick, all I could do was give a personal opinion. All right, I am a pedantic old fart but for God's sake, couldn't they see that it was worded wrongly? Don't worry, I put my cross under NO.
