We're taking part in the RSPB's annual birdwatch - just one hour either today (Saturday) or tomorrow (28-29 January). More details from: http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

Yes they are tiny, Belle, about 6 inches including the tail which is longer than the body. I think the youngsters are slightly darker than the piccy Tizer posted. (Thanks for that Tizer I didnt realise the link didn't work.)

That's OK Wendy, I thought the RSPB piccy was a good one and worth posting - the bird guide on their site is very good.

Belle, I'm sure they are long-tailed tits from your detailed description (Charles Darwin would have given you a job). They flit about in flocks and hang upside down while picking out insects from the leaves and flowers. They make a zeet zeet sound which Mrs T can hear easily but I can't detect at all (too much rock music in my youth perhaps).

We get flocks of them in the garden, then they disappear for weeks only to return later.  Wonder where they go?
