Here's a mystery for you. There isn't an answer yet because I don't know what it is. Here are two pics:

It's some sort of a gauge, made by A G Parker of 69 Icknield Street, Birmingham and on the front is engraved what I believe is the owner's name; Captain J H Square of Kingsbridge. I've put one or two enquiries out and am waiting to hear from them. I think it might be something to do with Guns because I have an idea that A G Parker was one of the founders of Parker-Hale, a company that specialised in gun sights and accessories. Has anyone ever seen anything like it?

They look like Vernier windage and elevation gauges that were used on medium calibre guns to calibrate their fixed sights, AA Guns, 30mm Orlikons etc. The bottom image with the reverse 'R' (Right) & 'L' (Left) would support this. |

That's my theory as well, it has a Vernier on the side but funnily enough it doesn't match up with the L to R scale on the top. I shall keep digging.

It's a lovely thing, that's the reason why I have looked after it all these years and I have always suspected there is a story behind it. I got it in a job lot of stuff when I bought a workshp a long time ago.

I got a reply about Captain Square. Notice that in 1866 he's noted as being captain of the local rifle volunteers. I think this is pointing towards my theory about this being related to firearms.

A search on Google reveals that AG Parker is one of the founders of Parker-Hale Ltd.AG Parker is described as a 'well-known rifleman of the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire regiment' and started manufacturing in 1880.His nephew ATC Hale later became a partner in the firm. An interesting potted history of the firm is given at : www.parker-hale.com/about.htm
I see there is a vintage Parker-Hale catalogue 1951 for sale on E-bay.Might you find similar items shown in there? Start bidding Stanley!!

Thanks for that Lou, I hadn't got round to the Parker Hale side. I have a contact at Birmingham museum and I was thinking of getting them going on the trail.

I have also put the question to www.oldguns.net, hopefully we will get an answer soon and it should be posted in the January 2005 section once they get round to doing it.
They have answered a few questions in the past regarding AG Parker, so we will wait and see

Apart from the demented banana.... The squirrel reminds me of watching one in Northfield MN busily gathering walnuts and hiding them in the wheel arches of the cars parked on the street. I don't know whether it survived the winter.....
