Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Hi, Cally. Ive had a look, it appears to be straight enough, the thing that bothers me is the engine arrangement relative to the price. An inboard engine is a much safer option. Have try at poking into the boatyards of Norfolk and Suffolk, lots of wide beamers down there. Ex Hire boats are worth a look, but beware of "plastic" boats. The dead fish, sounds like agricultural water contamination, a few years ago BWB had to pump vast quantities of Oxygen into the cut at Greenberfield to combat a similar crisis. The owner of the boat "Cerian" pictured above is a good man to talk to, another Mr Clarke, he as had that boat as long as I can remember. Keep looking, "But" do not rush into anything, I will try and contact Dr Lorenz, a Marine Surveyor he has built and lived on wide beamers, the bottom line here being that if we can get him on board, you can believe that any advice you get will be gospel. To our new member, Welcome, an to anyone else who is thinking of life afloat, "Please, Do Not Do It In Haste"!

Hey, Thomo - there won't be enough room for him on board I don't think Dr Lorenz would appreciate sharing with two madwomen and a woolly dog!

Thanks for looking at the eBay boat. Will also try to check out Norfolk & Suffolk but it'll be hard finding where to start.

Just had a thought - maybe we should have called this topic "Cut Corner"

Thanks Ringo but there's no need, as Cut Corner was only a play on words and probably wouldn't bring in as many googlers - they'll search for 'canal' rather than 'cut' I should think.Go to Top of Page

When I walk on the canal and see the boats - I will look out for you - just look for an elderly lady with a Shih Tzu and say hello!!

Alas, Moh, it may be some considerable time before we get afloat - but we often ride our bikes on the towpath so if you see two women huffing, puffing and wobbling along, complaining about a sore bum, then it's probably us.Go to Top of Page

It was indeed Stanley, "Slocomotion" or "Slowcomotion" I cant just remember, nice couple though. Boat came as a shell and they fitted it out themselves.

Any news on the dead fish, Ringo? That's quite alarming. I found an interesting boat, advertised on a broker's website but also on eBay. I'll PM Thomo to see what he thinks as it's slightly unusual.

Thank you for your email.

I have spoken to our environment & heritage manager who has confirmed that this is being investigated and we are currently liasing with the Environment Agency.

Many thanks

George and Jenny went into their boat permanently but I have an idea I heard that they went back into a house after a couple of years?

I thought the pics were breathtaking....I am glad you've got a new name re sorting info, but after tha last spate of conversation about another "corner" on here I can't help thinking along the lines of Boxing..."AND in the blue corner...we have......."

Found an ex BW shell at a boatyard in Goole but they've put a wheelhouse on top so that means it won't fit under L&L bridges.

However, there's a GRP motor cruiser which the proprietor reckons would be just the job for us. Although much shorter at 33', it has very usable space & layout.

I'm not so sure - I think I'd prefer steel to plastic. OK, steel tends to go rusty, but GRP gets osmosis.

The one thing in its favour is that it's much, much cheaper so we could eventually re-fit to quite a high standard of luxury.

I've got to keep in mind that beggers can't be choosers and my ideal boat is well out of our price range. So we might pootle over to Goole on Sunday and take a look, if only to rule it out.Go to Top of Page

Here's a whacky thought.

I've just watched the Tonight programme on TV which was all about alternative fuels: electricity, biodiesel, hybrid, hydrogen ... and chip oil!

I'm not sure about the first four, but I quite fancy the idea of recycling chip oil. We could then name the boat Chip Oyl ... or Chip Butty - Geddit???!!! (Butty boat, y'see)

Later...

There are loads of websites on the subject, and it turns out it might not be such a whacky thought after all. Pass me the vinegar...
