QUICK TIME ERROR MESSAGE.

As Doc will remember from when we were fighting the dark forces and configuring the Flying Machine, we kept running into a problem where we got an error message saying that 58:c qttask.exe couldn’t find a drive. This popped up at odd times and could be disabled by continuously pressing cancel. No big problem but annoying.

It’s been absent off parade for a while but as it had popped up again and I was sensing that the system was slightly poorly I went for an in depth furtle this morning. I cleaned the registry unused entries out, did a complete defrag and ran all my spy ware detectors. Nowt unusual. So I went to a favourite site (http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/) and ran their free Trojan scanner which takes some time but seems to be very thorough. I found two minor trackers and deleted them. Ever a fan of the radical solution I dug further. It transpired that embedded in Quick time is a small file called qttask.exe which on start up checks to make sure all the drives it needs to access are there. If you have any drives on USB like card readers and they were active the last time you used Quick Time it goes looking for them and if they are not active chucks up the error message.

Another restart and lo and behold, the error message pops up again. So, off to Google and did a search for 58:c qttask.exe. It turns out I am not the only one. I followed the instructions for removal that they suggested and couldn’t get anywhere as I couldn’t find the file I needed to delete, qttask.exe.

So I went radical again and uninstalled Quick Time. Knowing that uninstall programmes often miss folders and files I then went into Explorer and opened the Quick Time file in Programmes. Surprise surprise, two files were left in the folder and one was the qttask.exe I had been looking for. So I deleted them both and the folder.

Next time I need Quick Time I shall download it again but will remember to go into Explorer and delete qttask.exe, it will reinstate itself next time you use QT but as long as the condition of the USB drives doesn’t change I shall not get the error message. If I do, I shall simply delete it. It’s still annoying of course but it will not rear it’s head again until I reload QT.

Hope this helps if any of you have the same problem.

I marvel at a brain that can understand all this..I get part way along the route then exhaustion overtakes me. Sometimes I think i will never be able to get beyond the basics on this machine. My brother sent me family tree info on a memory stick,,,who knows what I've done but part of it or all of it is saved onto my computer.. the stick is now empty but I can only open the written bit with Legacy, all the lovely pics refuse to open. Now i know you will probably be able to tell me some helpful things to do but will i have the wit to be able to carry it out!?

I haven't viewed the photobus films yet because of the requirement for quicktime. The last time I downloaded it I had major problems with my pc following the install. I'm cautious to download anything since then unles Imindoors is around, he's quite a whizz.

He does have it on his machine but I've yet to jump on there and view the films.
