Political comment is a high risk activity on the site these days so I thought I'd try again to give those who are interested in politics a safe haven!

Oh Dear , what an opportunity wasted ......Although , what could be achieved by the  Murdochs being "grilled " by the Commons Select  Commitee.....anyway ?

Not only was James on top of his game , but the assembled M.P.s were almost defferential and forelock tugging  at times . With the possible exception of the "Guy in the cream jacket " asking a few probing questions , and James making  the mistake of finguring his nose whilest wiping his neck with the other hand ( classic "hot and bothered" reaction) , the whole thing was reminiscent  of Healey/Howe (1978) ...."being savaged by (a flock of ) dead sheep..."

....and I had to go out before the custard pie incident......(lax policing , or what !)

In the other commitee room earlier in the day (under Kieth Vaz), there was a much more professional performance....it was worth watching.... Stephenson and  Yates were put through it , and ( I thought) largely gave a good account of themselves......Fedorcio was less than impressive and could be in trouble.

No 10. has yet another problem or two ,with the release of email between (Chief of Staff ?) Llewelyn and Yates.....and talk of Wallis "advising" Andy Coulson prior to the General Election..

These matters might seem superficial , and a "nine day wonder" , but actually , Murdoch's "troops" have weedled there way into the heart of our Government and Police, and questions are quite rightly being asked about the judgement of our politicians (or even their collusion).

Vince Cable might be Prime Minister sooner than we think ..........

Aren't we all just a little bit sick and tired of all the scandals and wrong doings of all the 'high flying' bods who are supposed to be working in the interest of the community and the country as a whole? Greed and corruption seem to be the order of the day and it seems that no-one is exempt. True justice will never be seen to be done as they all watch each other's backs and all have 'friends in high places'. The bankers, the press, politicians, and even law enforcement officers have all been proved to be less than 'squeaky clean'. It needs a strong, ethical government to deal with such issues ( the one we have now is nothing short of a joke!) New laws need to be made, but they have to be passed through the House of Lords, need I say more? I think Cameron is 'running scared' and Clegg is acting like a headless chicken, they both know they've stuffed up, big time, and will not get another crack at the whip and quite right too! Who in their right mind would re-elect Laurel and Hardy to run their country?

I used to hate Maggie Thatcher with a vengeance, I didn't agree with anything  she did and thought her to be a hard nosed megalomaniac, but grudgingly have to admit she had more b***s (sorry!) than the mealy mouthed, over priveleged milk sops that we are having to endure at the moment!

Tiz, a good point and in the case of the police is strongly enforced on the lower ranks, pity their leaders didn't read the instructions as well.

Brad, don't be too hard on the Select Committee, in many ways their hands were tied by possible repercussions during any court cases that will follow. Not the right forum for retribution. I wonder who coached James in management speak?

Sandy, you're right, I've been saying the same thing for years.

Meanwhile, in the States, a major shareholder of Newscorp has gone public on the 'Murdoch Effect' on the share price. He wants Rupert to become chairman and another CEO unconnected with the Murdoch family to be appointed.

Hackgate moves onto the paperwork from operation motorman

So now it must be time for the Mail and Mirror to start to tremble.

Sandy I couldn't agree with you more, personally I think Gordon Brown would have been the man to clean up politics, which is why he got held off the top slot for so long then crucified when he got there.

All that heat and noise yesterday threw up this little gem:

In May 2006 both Goldsmith and Macdonald were given a briefing from the police that stated:
“a vast number of unique voicemail numbers belonging to high-profile individuals (politicians, celebrities) have been identified as being accessed without authority. These may be the subject of wider investigation.”
Cox went on to point out that the CPS decided to instead focus their investigation on Goodman and Mulcaire, and the hacking of two officials at the palace. Despite this, Goldsmith knew about the extent of the phone-hacking, yet seemingly did nothing. Cox was pushing Labour to reveal whether Goldsmith raised the issue at Cabinet, as he had a duty to do with matters of public interest.

Mmm, you could well be right there Belle. He wasn't really given a fighting chance was he? The jackals were snapping at his heels as soon as he took office. People complained he had no charisma etc, etc,  the misguided fools didn't realise that it isn't the PM's job to be charismatic, he/she is there to do the job of running the country, not to look dapper and spout a load of rhetorical tosh!  Personally, I thought him to be an ordinary, genuine bloke who tried to do his best in  the most difficult circumstances and against impossible odds! Alas, now we'll never know what he may have achieved given the support he deserved, instead we are stuck with primping, preening, ''I'm really trying to look concerned''  self serving toffs and all  their sycophantic lackeys!

Bailey I agree with you  about Vince Cable, he too seemed a genuine bloke and spoke a lot of sense.  I think, in an ideal world ( and a fantasy one obviously) that the perfect government would be made up of people who love their country, genuinely care about it's people, actively regenerate local industries and production, boost the NHS and get rid of all the ' management' leeches, ( bring back the Matrons!)  refuse to kow tow to the idiots in Brussels, defend us fiercely from illegal immigrants and the crimes they bring with them, provide the armed forces with ALL the equipment they rightfully deserve if in a war situation, support and allow more control to law enforcement and subsidise all life- boat and air- ambulance services, these vital emergency groups should not have to rely on charity!

I have had my 'rant' now folks, I'll get down from my soap box and leave you all in peace.

That was't a rant Sandy, it was measured response and I agree with you and Belle. As for Vince, nobody is perfect and I suspect there was a campaign against him both inside and outside the Party. Frank Field is another good man and tends to keep quiet. Clement Atlee was possibly the best PM of the 20th century and his communication skills were terrible. These days he'd be a laughing stock because of that.

Young Osborne spoke yesterday advocating a more politically connected Euro Zone. I'd rather he talked to us about the mythical recovery.

They cobbled up a rescue package for Greece yesterday but everyone agrees it is only a better sticking plaster, the basic deficit is still there. Despite Cameron's assurances that the bail out is nothing to do with us there was an interesting list of exposures to Mediterranean debt by UK banks. It totals over £200billion. We may yet have to support Greece by subsidising our banks. This is a real danger because the financial world regards to ne deal for Greece as being a partial reneging of debt.

Looks like the police are striking back:

Chris Huhne has apperently been hauled in for questioning again. Could be about to be charged

Morning Robert!  That is usually attributed to Sun Tzu who wrote 'The Art of War'. Our politicians would do well to sit and have a quiet read of it or even better Machiavelli's 'The Prince'. It's good advice in times like this!

Tiz put a quote up that 20 high street stores are closing every day. It wouldn't surprise me, their trade association released a press statement yesterday about a rise in High Street trading. Didn't say anything about profit margins, they are discounting hard to keep the numbers up and move stock.

I heard that terribly patronising woman Angela King yesterday passing on the message from her bosses the bankers, that all was well and the partial Greek default was minimal. She quoted the figure of £8billion which was mooted about a week ago. Total exposure to all the Mediterranean countries is nearer £200billion in UK alone but again, she didn't mention that.

Watch out for the 'growth figures' due out tomorrow. The general view is that they are not going to be good. It becomes more and more likely that criticisms of the ConDem coalition on the grounds they are cutting too far and too fast  and promoting a flat line economy are well-based. Over to you Ossie!

I know I keep banging on about this but I have always thought they made the big mistake when they attacked disposable incomes, the main driver of domestic spending which in turn is the biggest influence on economic activity. The same mistak that was made in the inter-war period. The cuts are just beginning to bite, don't look for any improvement and remember external events. The biggest dangers at the moment are national defaults and energy prices, we are nowhere near out of the woods yet. Meanwhile, August 2 gets nearer and the US still hasn't agreed a budget. Watch this space!

There's been a lot on the radio recently about the financial crisis in Greece..one "expert" advised them to come out of the Euro asap, others felt it was only the euro that was saving them as without the help of Germany and France they would go under completely..what no one said but to me it is an important  factor of the bailouts being rolled out accross europe..once you are in significantly in someone's debt, they own you. I don't think this is lost on the major players in the generosity stakes!
