Hi folks - this is my first posting. Stumbled across this site whilst googling details about our future home town and it seemd ideal for our query! We're in the process of buying (subject to conveyancers, gazzumpers, domestic crises, etc.) a property on the outskirts of Barnoldswick - all being well we should be in by January (so let's assume March!) and will need various pieces of work done on the house. First off, it needs a complete re-wire. Can anyone recommend a reasonable, reliable and tidy electrician locally? We have no local knowledge, and word of mouth is always best. We're also going to need a plumber and a joiner at some point.

Really looking forward to the move. Have had a wander round town and folk were really friendly, and there was a great community feel. Looking forward to joining t'battle against Tesco.

Marc

Welcome to the site Omlet.

Recently had some new radiators and pipework installed at our house. We used:

Wilkin Heating and Plumbing Ltd

01282 814750

Local Barlick firm, with very good service, they measured up and quoted within a few days of our enquiry and did the install of 4 new radiators, pipework and Mag Filter on the sytem in two days in our terrace. Our back room has a solid floor which we thought might be a problem but did not prove to be so. The lad that came was a very good worker and he made good all that he had to disturb. No pipework visible other than directly into the radiators. All carpets refitted where he had to have access. CH system drained, flushed refilled and tested.

Not had any electricals done for some time, my daughters partner is a qualified electrician but is based over in Silsden, he mainly does commercial but if you get stuck I can give you his number. There are some good lads round Barlick but I have never used them. I'm sure someone else will post a suggestion for you.

Hi Marc and welcome to the site. Intriguing nickname!

Having recently renovated a house from the bottom up, I've had quite a lot of experience with local tradespeople.

I can recommend a good electrician, plumber, kitchen supplier, windows manufacturer and joiner, and point you in the direction of others who will be able to give you competitive quotes too.

The area also has a good range of painter/decorators, carpet shops, etc. In fact, I discovered that in many instances it was more cost effective to use local suppliers than the big chain stores like B&Q, etc

If you're still interested, let me know and I'll email you the details.Go to Top of Page

Hi Callunna and panbiker - thanks  to both of you for your prompt and helpful replies.

My nickname is a reference to my specialism in the kitchen, largely (and sadly) a consequence of my generally limited culinary skills.

Callunna (intriguing nickname yourself - origin?) - I'll take you up on your offer of an email with contact details of the various tradespeople. Does this forum provide the option of being able to PM others directly from their names?

panbiker - thanks for the plumber details. We need to have full central heating installed but there is no mains gas available at the property, so we'll probably go with an LPG system - I think they (Calor) put in the boiler and radiators as part of the whole installation, but we'll need a plumber to then sort out the new bathroom, downstairs loo and kitchen - the latter will need a joiner too.

Trying not to think too hard about all of the work (and expense) ahead of us - I'm sure it will all be lovely when it is done!

Thanks again.

...except that for some reason the site thinks I don't exist and people can't PM me. If this happens, just let me know on this thread and we'll sort out some other method of communication.

And BTW my nickname is the Latin equivalent of my given name. My punk alter ego in the '70s was called Callunna Vulgaris.Go to Top of Page

Hi Callunna - tried to PM you and got the message "Sorry, Callunna does not wish to receive private messages", so sending has failed. If you can't receive, can you at least send PMs? If so, maybe it would be as easy to send me a PM with the details of the tradespeople you'd recommend? Or do you have an alternative to suggest?

Nice touch with the moniker, H.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks, Doc - much obliged. I'll give him a ring in January, when we should have a firm idea of a completion date so that we can get him round as soon as we've got the keys and moved in.

Talking of sparks, the extractor fan in our bathroom packed up a few weeks ago - just days after the 12-month warranty ran out (isn't that typical?).

I fully intended getting on to our electrician, Karl Boothman (excellent, BTW) but kept forgetting. In the meantime, every couple of days we'd switch it on out of habit before realising it wasn't working.

Then, would you believe, at the weekend E found the bathroom freezing cold and realised the fan had been going full blast. It's still working fine today.

How do you explain that? Go to Top of Page

I could just be a loose connection at the fan or switch. Why dont you have it wired to the light switch, that way it will only be on when you are using the bathroom. You can also have timer fitted (some fans have them built in) so that it runs for a few minutes after you have left the room. I think the latter is in the regs if you dont have a window in the bathroom.

If it's intermittent it needs checking out. Dont want any arcing connections!
