Here's the first of what we (Big Kev and Callunna) hope will be many images combining old and new photos of Barnoldswick.

This one is a 19th century picture of Wellhouse Farm which stood on present day Church Street.

Having put the two images together, though, it's possible that the farm actually stood where the car park is now, ie behind Church Street on Brook Street. The gable end in the original photo didn't match the present day gable end of the Bodycare shop, whereas it might fit the one at the end of Garden/Market Street - but this might just be down to a variation in the position of the cameras.

Anyway - it was fun blending the two images together. And yes, that is Callunna standing next to the little girl...

Apologies for the small size. The original jpg is 1500pixels/127mm wide, but it seems to shrink when I insert it in a post.

Thanks to SG for supplying original Wellhouse Farm image.

Not big enough for Big Kev. I believe it is the postmaster of the day.

Two more scenes now in production.

I'm really enjoying this project and can't wait to do more of them.

No absolute evidence but the man in the doorway is almost certainly John Lancaster who was postmaster in 1896. Matthew Hartley and the Taylor Brothers were the builders who bought Wellhouse Farm and of the two firms, Hartley was the one who built with ashlar (fully dressed stone) and specialised in public buildings so I think he's the favourite for all the buildings down that side which are dressed stone. (See the recent article in BET on Wellhouse Farm.)

This is a brilliant topic and I really appreciate the effort that members are taking with the pictures. I think thomo's colour picture of the station, which is not yet embedded in  the topic,is quite spooky and could be real. Keep em coming please. Nolic

Nice angle on the station, difficult to see at this size but it looks as though the Co-op row across the line has the original shop fronts. Is the original good enough to home in on them? If so it's a very rare image.

I was just wondering whether people wouldn't mind sort of, well, maybe posting their pics in another separate topic with a different title.

I know it's cheeky of me to ask and I know it's a public forum and all that, but this particular idea and project is something we've spent a lot of time and effort on, and we have plans for taking it further.

Only trouble is, it will now look like we're copying others whereas in fact we've already done train station and Wapping images (among others) - we just weren't posting them until we have the whole project finished.

I'm sure you'll all think I'm being over bossy or whatever, and I know I've no right to prevent anyone doing whatever they want to do - but the Ghosts project is something quite specific, which will hopefully become clearer when we've completed it.

It's my own fault for being a bit over enthusiastic - maybe I should have kept our idea secret until we were ready to launch it, so I'm sorry if all this sounds like I'm being ockard.
