Could those people who replied to my post yesterday please repost, or perhaps email me directly. I didn't get to read the replies before the hacker deleted all the posts.

Cheers,

Here is my info again:

My Suthers ancestors first appeared in the Township of Stansfield (now Todmorden), Yorkshire, in the 1680's as "Sutherd" or "Suthard".  In one branch of the family, Luke "Soothers" (my 2nd cousin 8x removed) was baptised by John, webster of Stansfield 20 June 1756 at Heptonstall Church. Luke "Southers" (a woolcomber) married Nelly Clark at Heptonstall Church on 27 Dec 1774. Both signed with their mark. There is no further trace of this couple in the area, however, there is an unmarked grave in the new yard of Cross Stone church owned by "Suthers of Skipton" (recorded by the Todmorden Antiquarian Society). It appears that this Luke must be the same Luke Suthers that baptised several children at Bridge Chapel in Barnoldswick between 1789 and 1798, with a new wife called Grace. His occupation is given in two entries as a woolcomber, which was an uncommon occupation in the Suthers family.

Luke's eldest son, William was baptised 1 May 1790. He is most probably the same William of Barnoldswick who was discharged from the Rifle Brigade at age 38 in 1822 (national archives WO 97/1088/61). This correlates with him being described as a "Chelsea Pensioner" in the 1861 Barnoldswick census (see Stanley's posting). William appears to have married twice, first to Mary Hardcastle 19 May 1823 at Barnoldswick, then to Ann Lee 28 July 1828 at St Bartholomew, Colne, Whalley. William was father of Luke b. 1835 (1851 census) and Luke was the father of William Frederick Suthers b. 1855 (1861 census) who were Barnoldswick manufacturers.

If you have any further info on the Suthers family (additional to what is already available in these forums) then I'd love to hear from you.

I put a further post up about the small weaving shed on Red Lion Street Earby.  Nolic replied saying that it was the Windle Brothers and they had 10 or twelve looms.  If anyone has any more information about them please post it.

Not quite sure what's going on here but this topic has swum up to the surface under its own steam. Is the archive developing a life of its own?

I've just encountered a fascinating website called "Soldiers of the Queen" which features old photographs, often with some background research. There is a superb photo of Luke Suthers of Barnoldswick (1878-1930), the son of William Frederick Suthers. The photo was taken circa 1900, showing Luke to have been a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade.

There's another similar photograph of an unidentified man, who the website author suggests might be Luke's brother, Frederick. I disagree with that, as Frederick was still in UK when the 1901 census was taken, so it seems unlikely that Fred participated in the Boer War like Luke did.

Here's the link:

Nice one Steve. Billy Brooks was in the Boer war as an ambulance man as well. See his tapes in the LTP.
