Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.
As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.
He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!
[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs. His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history.... he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault. He had too bad a start.....]

My Sam was part Kelpie ( tuther part was Staffy). She used to round me up! If she wanted to show me something, or be taken for a walk she would 'shepherd' me into position. She never nipped me though...

I feel sorry about Jack and I can understand your feelings.
I have a Golden Retriever that is 14 years and 6 months.
Soon I and my wife will go through the same heartbreake. We dread the day.

Stanley, it might be worth calling in at your local corn / feed merchant. They usually have a notice board with litters of all sorts on. Will have a look on ours, have to go there today.

Everyone has a favourite, which is good as otherwise all dogs would be the same !!
It's springer spaniels who tick all the boxes for us but they need a lot of space and can be VERY lively. They are fun loving, entertaining family dogs with a great sense of the ridiculous. Our current one is almost 5 years old and I dread the day when she has to leave us as it is so heartbreaking.

Stanley, have you thought of the RSPCA, they may have a bitch in with pups?
Or another thought----your local vet, they may know of some.

Well, i must be the last to have heard the sad news... I knew something was wrong, and was about to send you a pm Stanley, to find out what it was, but I went on to one of these new fangled Blog thingummies, Nolics i think, and he was saying something about a difficult decision you'd had to make, so i went searching for this topic....and am now in the picture. Like everyone else I am very sorry that things had to end that way, Jack was beautiful dog, but I am glad you are thinking of finding a new dog/dogs, as you obviously have a lot to offer! My favourite dog has always been a daschund, we have had a few over the years, small dogs with huge hearts and all the courage of a giant...they are the smartest dog I know, and the funniest but they do have one drawback , like all hounds they are ill to house train...
As to border Collies, the closest relationship i have ever had with a dog, was with a Collie that lived next door to me, I guess you could say I was adopted, or was it romance, whatever we spent years in a very close and respectful relationship. He would watch my children when they were out at play, i would give him the spare milk that my free milk tokens afforded me. His owner was away most of the time , and like all farm dogs he was perfectly happy outside, but when it was hammering down , i would put newspapers down and open the door, and in he would come, both of us ok but not exactly happy with the arrangement, so that as soon as it stopped raining, he would stand up , and i would let him out. He would come on all our summer walks, i never had a lead so it was a good thing he was immpecably behaved, and very traffic savvy . He would sit on our step guarding us through the night, and if i went away he would greet me with huge smiles on my return( people used to think he was baring his teeth to bite, but I understood that he thought himself a human so greeted me in the way humans do, the fact that he was wagging his tail so hard his whole body used to bend in half, kind of gave the game away.) Eventually we had to move away, i couldn't bring myself to tell him, but I didn't need to he already knew, the night before we moved , he took himself off the door step and withdrew to other side of the road watching quietly, and though I called him the next morning, he would not come over to say good bye, and i could not promise we'd ever be back so I had to respect his distance...
So many good things come from knowing a dog.

William, our eldest son, works one day a week at the vets in Colne and he has asked all the staff to keep an eye out for any pups that will be suitable for you Stanley.

Ben, the Patterdale, having his first feed..........
Carol and Doc found me a dog and last night he called in for me and we picked Carol and Amie up from work and went into the wilds of Colne......
I'd already said that I doubted if it was a black Yorkie and we were speculating that it might be a Newfoundland pup but as soon as I saw it I knew we'd hit the jackpot. If I know anything nabout dogs, it's a Patterdale, totally black apart from one tiny tuft of white on its right hind toe. It belonged to an old lady who couldn't manage it. It's not house trained and full of energy. We managed to have a pee outside at 3am this morning. Everything else on the carpet! This will soon change when he gets into a routine and some exercise. I doubt if he's walked a mile in his life. So, cancel all orders and watch this space as I go into child care again!

By the way, yes, he whined when I left him downstairs and yes I cracked, he slept next to my head! Six hours sleep and once he's gone off he sleeps like a log. He's just jumped onto my lap........

5 months Cath. I have just taken him for his morning walk, crap and a pee.... these things are important! I doubt if he's ever walked a mile on a lead in his life. He's like a fish on the line. A selection of leads and a harness came with him all never been used. (At the moment he's up on my armchair sitting quiet, a good sign) I've seen a dog bed in the shop this morning and will go and get it for him as soon as they open. He needs his own place. I have an idea he was kept in a dog cage at night....... I reckon he'll be all right as long as I can stay the course with the baby-rearing! One thing is certain, he's friendly, intelligent and full of energy. Not a bad start
