I have just spent the last 3 full days digging out a formal herb garden,  laid out in a French style symmetry.( hence the bad wrist). Now I need to plant things quickly before all those weeds come back

 I already have rosemary, thyme, chives, mint, lemon balm, marjoram, and lavender(multiple plants of each). Has any one any ideas about othe perenial herbs that can with stand  long periods with very little attention. The soil is well drained and very fertile. I have 8 symmetrical patches in all. Two are already filled. This year I am putting potatoes in another two of them , but I need some ideas for a long term permanent herb plot. I did think I would do one patch with annuals and biennials like parsley and basil.

Stanley have roots on one cutting of  Southern Wood, now potted up. Hope it is ok when we are away , I like to nurture my cuttings inside till they are well established

I think I spy chives too...I think the flowers are wonderful....are they depicted on the backside of the old threepenny bit ....or was that thrift ?

The chives just go on and on. I think the top dressing of growmore and blood and bone meal is doing a good job. Very poor soil. The lilac is racing away now, it has got its rotts down into something it likes.

I like chive flowers, they are edible and liook lovely and taste nice in a salad, or as a food dressing on a plate

Our lilac has gone mad this year, will have to be cut back later in the year as it is growing over other shrubs.

One jar runny honey, one small bottle cider vinegar and a good picking of leaves. Chop leaves roughly, drop into a bowl with the vinegar and honey and wizz up with a hand held blender. Pour into jars and put in fridge. When they have settled pour off most of the liquid and use again with more fresh leaves. Keep topping jars up with new mix and you end up with mint sauce that keeps for over a year in the fridge. I have six jars already.... Dead simple and tastes lovely.

That sounds a bit yuppy , and expensiveSmile. Working man's version - I do it like this  - chop leaves finely , scald with a drop of boiling water, add a bit of sugar, then some malt  vinegar.  Best  used fresh, but you can add it to half a made lemon lelly, and it will keep for ages in the fridge.

Hey, let's all sing from the same hymn sheet....It's chopped mint leaves,vinegar and "sugar" to taste..... Nothing flash.....just a few individual twists...( but PLEASE no Balsamic ...eh !)

Apple and mint jelly's pretty  nice too ....'specially with Pork ....
