My attention was attracted to a group of forty or so cows trotting up our lane at lunchtime......(nice big brown bull in the middle of the party )... They turned left at the top and headed for Pendoggett and Port Isaac...
No humans in site , so a quick call to Mr Blewitt , who said they would propably belong to Mr Button....."leave it to me "
Twenty-five minutes later , said party came down the lane with humans , all smiling !
They probably wanted to go for a paddle , but sadly , I don't think they made it to the Sea !
No harm done .....one lane a bit more mucky than usual (but rain is forcast )....
Wonder what Mrs Sytner would have said ...eh !

Comrade, perhaps he's reconsidering his legacy.
Looks as though the rebels have control of Tripoli. Now for the aftermath, will US step back in again? Nothing is certain.

" ( not sure about the apostophe ) " I said this pedantry would be a hostage to fortune......I would say that as a plural it doesn't need one, but it does look natutral doesn't it? Without it, it would look like an old operating system!

Stanley, just remember what our old mate Harold MacMillan, who was well versed in Med matters, said -` There's no Middle East leader who can't be deposed and replaced by one much worse'. So far as the West is concerned this could, only too easily be the case in Libya and, most certainly, Syria. I only wish today's wet behind the ears leaders would take more notice of history before setting out on their ventures.

Belle, my statement still stands
It takes time for people to prepare responses. having been through UCCA sometime ago I know how it worked before computers.
Just because you can log on, does not mean the information is there.
Get everyone logging on, then you have a dramatic collapse as the system protects itself
Again, I would state it is a management of expectations. Just because you "can" does not mean it is "possible".

What attracted my attention today:
Chris Mullins new political diaries, decrying the dysfunctionality of both the Blair and Brown years. A well written book, and I hope that it too gets into the R4 book slot

Tardis I think perhaps you are not up to date with how UCAS purport to process the exam results these days. They are the ones that have moved the entire system to computer so that everything is done on line... and their website "Track" was specifically designed to take every student on their books through the process. For weeks UCAS have been encouraging all the applying students to follow their progress on "Track" and to log on on results day to see if the university of their choice had accepted them. So as they already had processed all applicants thus far, they knew the exact numer of people likely to log on... and as they had narrowed down the ability of the applicants to get information from anywhere else but "Track" they were soley responsible for the mismanaged debacle that occurred when everyone followed their instructions, and the ensuing distress and panic. I hope this explanation clarifies for you why I think them inept

I do not see the disparity between the statements we both make and will readily accept the fact that I am not totally up to date, although my son did go through the system this year and got his A level results ontime and knew exactly the outcome without having to log onto the site to "track".
Again I will state it is "management of expectation"
If, as the UCAS purports that more people tried to log on, you have to ask why, because the numbers who were likely to miss out on places and enter clearing is roughly the same as last year.
Thus where did all the extra traffic come from for the website collapse? I would venture to suggest the "worried" who had the right results and simply wanted an electronic confirmation because even at age 18 they have been embued with a level of cyniscism from their eductation and daily lives.
I think that I stated before, when you point a finger at some one you have to be very careful about the others on your hand that point back at you.

I find your tone offensive and hostile Tardis so i will only answer this, as I stated earlier, the people who were logging on were not those who had got their acceptances, or those who were due to go into clearing, it was those who were in the predicament of having the right number of points but the wrong grades or vice versa, without knowing whether their chosen uni had agreed to take them they could neither move forward into clearing nor appraoch any second choice they may have. As to where the blame lies if you set upa website to specifically inform students of their chosen unis reply, narow down their options of finding this anywhere else, and continually bombard them with advice to "follow your progress on Track" then it can hardly be levelled at the students.

Michael, Belle is entirled to expect her opinion to be respected and not attacked. You are entitled to yours as well but we know from past experience that if opinions are reinforced by confrontation it causes ill-feeling. Give this a bit of thought.
Ted, there was a time when the FO was recognised as the world authority on the Middle East and we had some good brains concentrating on these matters. All gone now and one gets the feeling that our leaders are reacting knee-jerk fashion instead of following a logical policy. Nothing is certain in Tripoli yet but everone seems to be assuming that it's all over. Best to wait and see.
The Strauss Karn case is about to collapse. There is ample evidence of sexual contact but in the end it comes down to whether it was consensual or not. The old story, what chance does a chamber maid have against a powerful and well-connected man. She may not be perfect but he certainly isn't, he has a track record. I've felt sorry for the lady ever since she blew the whistle.
