I hope i am not breaking any rules here, but i have spent a few years on our families history, and one site that i have found extremely helpful, useful, & friendly, it is,  www.rootschat.com

There are no charges for using the site, it is basically a forum where friendly members swap information, a major plus is that people will carry out look ups of census, surnames, areas ,  etc. for other members,it was originally set up to serve UK & Ireland, but now it covers a lot of other countries throughout the world, if you have hit the proverbial "brick wall" in your research it is well worth a try .      bodger

There's only one rule for decent non-commercial posting:  'THERE ARE NO RULES!'  So post away Bodger and damn the torpedoes.

It is a good site, I have made use of it myself on occasions. Thank you for reminding me about it.

I've had quite a lot of help from Cere and other members on there.  Used to use it a lot and enjoyed the chats but don't use the computer much in the evenings now and that is when the most help is available.

I can also thoroughly recommend RootsChat, they are very friendly. extremely helpful and knowledgeable.  It is very interactive and it is good to be able to help and share with other people also.  I have posted sections of illegible bits from census records and GRO certificates and within a very short space of time helpful suggestions have been posted from the experts.  Also I have discovered a huge American section of our family descended from one family who sailed to the States in 1881, mainly through some very helpful American members of this site.

Incidentally - I was directed to the OG site through a recommendation on RootsChat!!
Bodger, welcome to OGFB, and thanks for reminding me of Roots - I must wish them happy Christmas.

I looked in last night and got someone in Canada, who told me the ship Val's aunt went out on, and the date of arrival .

thanks for the tip on this web-site.  It's fantastic!  Ten minutes after I posted a query I had 7 replies all giving me information I never would have found out on my own.

Isn't it wonderful what can happen when people get together and help each other.  It's called being nice to each other and if there's one theme that runs right through OG it's that.

It's earlymorning in Aus and I just woke up to check for anymore replies to my query.  There were 15!  I now know what this Gt x3 Aunt's movements were when she left England for the US, where she lived and the best part of all, I now have her photo.  It's just amazing the effort people have gone tofor a complete stranger!!!!

I think there's hope for the world yet!

Cheers,
Jill
