A few minutes of colour film of Nelson in 1962 shown on North West Tonight on BBC1. Made by Pendle movie makers, it showed the local mills, people walking along the streets, visiting the shops, going on holiday and cricket at Seed Hill. Would love to see the whole film.

Here's a link to Part 1....There are several more
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5uaFQrEidg

ps If I google "Nelson Lancashire " , the first thing that is offered is a selection of  snaps I took from a light aircraft over Nelson in 2005....(Put to music and posted by some steeplejack bloke called Tom...and a very good job he did too ! )...finishing with a shot of my Grandad's Mill.

Yes Bradders, that is indeed the very same film. I was 5 in 1962 and may well have been in the film somewhere. I can remember some of the people in the shops and old market hall. So many good memories, but not much left of all that, now. Cheers.

Got a good quote from Martha this morning. I told her that I had put the link to the article up on the site and that it had gone down well. She wrote "This isn't a website; it's  a small country!!! Glad they liked it!  xxxm"

The 'Sun Drop', one of the the world's biggest yellow diamonds at 110 carats sold yesterday for $12.4million including commission. Safe place to invest money?

Watched the first of the films. Salutory to think that 1962 is only yesterday as far as I am concerned! I'd been at Sough  for six years.

I see the BMA have said that smoking should be banned in private cars because of the high levels of toxins in an enclosed space. Apart from the fact that the evidence on 'passive smoking' is weak to say the least, this is an intrusion on private behaviour and personal choice. If banned in cars it's not far to a ban in your own home. If the criterion is 'levels of toxins' how about Incense in churches and barbeque smoke? How about particulate levels in large cities? This is a slippery slope and one wonders if the BMA headline grabbing department is in full flow here.

A far better medical story is the truly miraculous cure of the 7 month old baby at King's College hospital. Liver completely destroyed by a virus and needed a transplant. The doctors have been working on a therapy whereby activated cells can be injected which convert the toxins to harmless chemicals and give the liver a chance to regenerate naturally obviating the need for a transplant and anti-rejection drugs. The childs liver regenerated and has been pronounced healthy and free from the virus. Brilliant. The father was on R4 this morning and it was touching to hear his account and his gratitude to the doctors. Now there's a positive medical news item!

I can't see how they would enforce a ban on smoking in private cars...but you do wonder if it should be something that increases the cost of insuring a car? As fas as I can see smokers are back in evidence everwhere and are slowly eroding the restrictions that were placed on them.

Great story about the baby Stanley..we forget in all this climate of blaming and negativity just how much good work is going on in the NHS.

What's been catching my attention recently is the cost of  University fees not least because two of mine have been paying them...I am begining to think it's time someone had a good look at whether they are value for money..or are our kids running enormous debts for no reason, having been further educated at sloppy establishments by inept tutors in a system that is connning all of us into believing it's an advantage where more often than not the degree gained is absolutely useless.

I am with Stanley all the way on the smoking bit. I nearly got taken out by a mobile user this morning, if they cannot stop that, they could never control smoking in private cars.

Sep Blatter saying that there was no racism in football. What planet does this clown come from? Rio Ferdinand (who he?) certainly doesn't agree.

Restrictions on drivers. I think of the thousands of miles I did with a cup of coffee and a butty on the engine cover next to my elbow. Illegal now but definitely an aid to road safety as far as I was concerned. Same applied to smoking. I'm glad I'm old and don't have to worry about these things. It would perhaps be better to raise the standard of driver education by making the tests more stringent. One of the reasons I threw my licence into touch was because modern traffic frightens me, traffic patterns used to be predictable, they aren't any more and the police admit that one driver in five is under the influence of drugs (legal and illegal) or alcohol.

Pressure on FIFA mounts. Good! About time that nest of vipers was cleared out! Where are the national associations in all this? Bit like the FIA, they control the revenue, time for a wholesale clear-out.

Sorry for the delay in replying Ray......(events elsewhere etc !)
My Grandfathers's mill was "Bradley Nelson & Son Ltd"  , Hendon Mill , Hallam Rd.

...and my Dad's (shortlived attempt to carry on)  was "Frank Bradley Ltd" , Throstle Nest Mill , Bank House Rd.

Both Nelson of course....
When I first joined this site  , Stanley kindly dug out a photo of the engine at Hendon Mill , and I still go back and look at it occasionally... (Wonderful ! ...I can TASTE  it ...Spent hours and hours in the engine house when I was a kid)...She was a real Beauty...and Big too !

Thanks again Stanley. As a kid I used to stand next to a connecting rod that drove the flywheel and within seconds I'd be  swaying with the movement ....Big Tommy  (the engineer) would laugh his socks off !

The smaller engine was between the engine house and the office  , in a room accessed by a flight of steps....If you were in the office you couldn't hear it running ....until it stopped (If you know what I mean)
