According to this weeks BET, there is a proposal by Maple Grove Developments (Preston) to create a Supermarket and Car Parking for 275 cars on the current Carlson Filtration site at Butts. Apparently, plans are already underway to create a new food store and car park. The plans are at an early stage and rest on obtaining planning permission and a successful re-location of the Carlson Filtration operations.

You can read the article in the Barnoldswick and Earby Times (BET) and comment on the article here:

www.pendletoday.co.uk

The development company is holding an exhibition of the proposed plans on
Wednesday 30th Jan 2008 at the Rainhall Centre from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.

Good or bad idea, discuss..

Traffic on Church Street will be fun ....... or just make Calf Hall Rd a dual carriageway.  Buggers always seem to get what they want in the end though it does make a bit more sense that a Booths in Barrowford. Nolic

" it does make a bit more sense that a Booths in Barrowford."

It makes no sense at all.

One of Barlick's USPs is that we have a variety of small, individual shops. Without them, (and I think it's safe to predict that a new supermarket would adversely affect their viability) Barlick could become, heaven forbid, like Barrowford: lots of short-lived fancy schmancy shops but no real character.

Now I like my exotic food as much as anyone and let's face it, the Co-op falls a bit short in that department. But I do like a wander round town every now and again because it's nice to actually talk and smile with people. If I want to shop in an ugly, faceless, just-like-all-the-other-stores type of emporium I go to Colne. However, I've been surprised at what the local individual shops DO sell if you just look.

Having said this, my opinions will - as Nolly suggests - make absolutely no difference to the planners and councillors. They will do what they want (or are paid to want).

It's laughable that the plans are only available to view on one afternoon/early evening. I can't make it on that day and I bet lots of other people can't. But they'll squeal "Well we DID make the plans available but nobody could be bothered to come and look ..."

Councillors - I know you're lurking - come on, I DARE you to comment on this public forum (but you won't, will you?) Go to Top of Page

I find the proposed supermarket plan for the Butts site, incredulous, the very reason Carlson filtration want to relocate is due to the difficulty with access to their works, how on earth can this be improved with a supermarket, whose life blood is access, I look forward to seeing the proposed plans for this site, and some answers.....

No chance of councillors engaging in open debate, they only like exposure when they are controlling it.  I agree with Gus, access is going to be a major problem.  What a good job they paved Butts and are putting a new gas main in now.......  I suppose it will give the Co-op competition and might provide a few jobs but I can't help thinking that a major development in the town centre is a build too far as regards pressure on the infrastructure and character of the town.

I think it is quite a shame that our local councillors do not take more part on our site, although i am sure that most of them pay the odd visit, ( under the cloak of darkness) to read other peoples points of view, whatever happened to Martin Bell, the Liberal  demo. councillor who joined our site last year ? I know the site is non political etc, but we are open to all shades of opinion, or, is the threat of an OPEN FORUM beyond the pale for our present town councillors. We will see , without doubt, which way they all jump with this new proposed plan for a supermarket, after of course they all decided which
route is the most highlighted vote catcher.

ooo, it makes me so angry that the council is full of clueless single minded idiots.

Its ridiculous.  There's no way that Butts is a suitable access road for a supermarket.

there is only enough room for single way traffic at the moment and there's no way of widening it, there's houses either side, very old houses as well.

It would seriously threaten some of the local independant shops in the centre.

Barnoldswick doesn't need a massive supermarket. The centre, with all its independant shops is what makes it such a nice town and gives it its character and its sense of community.

Anyway, anybody got any ideas as to what the best course of action is to stop it??I know its a tough job against such huge organisations but we've got to at least make it as difficult as possibe for them.

I will put the idea on the front page and POLL the Members and Guests alike to see what views are forthcoming.

dele, write to the papers, particularly the BET.  Write to the councillors, better still email them.  Hasn't someone got a list of email addresses?  Post it and then we can let them know what we think.  Make your views known......

When I saw this, my first thought was "surely not the Butts at Barlick".  My brother lived down there for a period about 6 years ago and I seem to recall it being a difficult, narrow turning from the main road and not a particularly wide road which went - effectively nowhere.

From memory, there is no way the road could be widened so how your fearless leaders (who lead you fearlessly from one catastrophe to another) could justify planning approval is beyond me.  However, I believe they have to consult and are doing just that - albeit very narrowly.  You would think in this day and age, the application and plans could be put on-line wouldn't you?

Once we have a few more votes on the Poll, we could send them the results with a message like - We voted you in - Now take notice!

The poll is a great idea doc, but, I wont vote just yet until i have seen the plans at the rainhall centre. quite frankly my only opposition would be the access to and from the area, the co-op as a supermarket, has no opposition, and in my opinion is just a glorified corner shop. In the early sixties we had all the same arguments about the opening of  Barmy Micks, who if anything brought people into the town, i believe this new plan if, viable would help the decline of shoppers away from the area.

There are both Pro's and Con's to the proposal, I put up the Poll to gauge the opinions of the site visitors and members.

On a personal note, I wish Carlson's all the best in relocating their business and their employees to more suitable premises, and I think all those on here would wish them the same. This Poll is not about their relocation but what happens to the site once they have vacated it. Like you say Gus, a new supermarket would have advantages for the town and it's people and of course on the flip side it would also have some negative impact.

It was only posted up this afternoon and already there are 30+ respondants, it's early days yet, we will see what it looks like after a month when everyone as had a chance to air their choices.
