Shipping forecast is dire. Hurricane force winds forecast out at sea and by all accounts we are in for a stinker today, gales and heavy rain with damaging wind speeds. The equinoctial gales are here with a vengeance!

Later. Back from a breezy but dry walk. Wind rising and blustery by the time we got back. Sky is almost clear, very fast moving broken cloud and a strange orange tinge. Glass has started to rise and if I was right about us being in the centre of the depression this squares with increasing wind speed. Also, the forecast is for heavy rain later falling as snow above 150metres (490 ft). Barlick lies at about 550ft so if they are right it could get wintry. Wind speed of 80mph forecast and blizzard conditions. If anyone is at work and has a drive home later think seriously about leaving early and be careful.

Lots to be said for having a warm house and being retired!

Windy overnight down south , strange things being blown accross the M3 as I drove through the Hampshire/Surrey Commons ( either dead christmas trees or bits of brush/scrub from the heathlands ) . Nice fullish bright moon in the West at 8am this morning.

When there is a blocking high over Great Britain , do the normal atlantic lows pass north or south instead or do they queue up and build up giving the rapidity of changable and extremely wet and windy weather  once they do get shifted past high?

Fine, bright but windy & very cold.  Went to the crematorium with our girls' bling for Christmas and the hail and wind were horrendous.

Whippy, blocking highs are usually centred on Northern Europe and are unpredictable in their effects on incoming weather from the west. We recently had a beneficial one but it was exactly the same circumstance that brought us the bitter weather last year. It is a chaotic system and has its own constantly changing rules.

Forecasted gales and blizzards never came. Walked up to Letcliffe yesterday in blustery cold wind with occasional  hail showers. Glass is still on 28" and I suspect that we are still in the eye of the depression. The wind will come when the pressure rises again. This could well be the reason why Barlick got off so lightly yesterday. Mind you, it's noticeably colder.

No snow last night but we measured a wind gust of 42mph. That is quite strong to say we are slightly sheltered from south westerlies.

Cold nasty rain and sleet at dinnertime yesterday so no Letcliffe walk, Vally Gardens instead! Opened the door this morning to cold morning and dry flags but just starting to spot with rain. Just had a look and there is no wind but wet snow falling straight down and not sticking at the moment. Glass has risen to 28.2". We shall see.....

Snowing steadily and sticking at 6:30. No wind so nothing to shift the clouds. Looks wintry out there!

Maz and Cathy asked for wintry pics to cool them down as they swelter in 30C plus. Not exactly drifts but is this wintry enough for you?

I've just been down Manchester Road and already there is carnage with the snow, two cars crumpled against the wall where they have slid on the snow. Take it easy out there folks!
