A few years ago while walking a part of the Pennine Way we passed through Cowling on the A6068 Keighley road. On the fells to the north of Cowling are several small sheds, which looked as if they were used as summer weekend bothies, complete with signs of peat digging and piles of neatly cut peats drying. We would like to buy some peat because we love the smell of it burning, so we asked around, even stopping to ask in a couple of newsagents next time we passed through by car. However nobody could tell us anything - either the whole thing is shrouded in secrecy or very few locals actually know what goes on up on the fells above the village.

Anybody able to shed any light on this mystery?

Ben, the peat digging operation is acover for darker, more worthwhile activities related to the black stuff. Google "Cowling" as there is a community website that might have more information - but be wary of what they tell you. Nolic

Benj, be careful what you think aloud on a public site. There are still plenty of people around who have good reason to be wary of the excise men. Nolic

Actually.......  Cowling Moor is owned by the villagers who have all rights on it and so peat-cutting will be an exercise of those rights.  They have a regular shoot on the moor.  Any mineral rights will also belong to the villagers...........

Looks like Benj has realised that we need to be careful. Don't want the villagers of Cowling being persecuted like the brothers in Sabden were with their "mineral" discoveries. Nolic

We'd still like to buy a couple of bags of peat for the winter. It's a disappointing fuel but you just can't beat that smell....  maybe it's because it reminds us of holidays in Scotland. last time we went up we bought a couple of bags from a coal merchant in Wick.
