The Web n Walk USB modem connected to my Apple Mac notebook is pretty good, but sometimes OGFB takes ages to load pages so I wanted to check that I was getting the speed promised by T-Mobile.

I went on several speed checking websites and I'm pleased to say that on average (I did 5 tests per website) I am indeed achieving the 3.6 meg which I should do through the 3G network.

The website below was quite fun to use (I haven't even tried to make it a clicky, just copy & paste into your browser)

http://www.speedtest.net

and I notice that  webmasters can quickly set up a facility on their own websites using some code supplied by these people.

I was wondering whether anyone might find that a useful little addition to OGFB and if so, whether Doc or Ringo could facilitate it?

Comrade, I reckon anything with Pernod in will actually be a near-death experience.......  I must be allergic to it!

I was told to avoid Armagnac brandy because it has a high content of methanol - nasty.

I remember a story told by a man who had been an officer in the British Army in Greece at the end of the war. He was told to contact a certain Greek who would supply him and his colleagues with liquor. He found the man and asked for details and prices. All spirits were on offer - whisky, gin, brandy, rum, vodka etc - and all made to order by the Greek. Then the officer asked how quickly he could provide supplies if he had to make it all. The Greek said one day for all the spirits - except for brandy which would be two days because it had to be matured!

Bath tub brandy was a big danger in Barlin after the war.  We were warned about it as soon as we got over there.  Equivalent of five bob a bottle and they reckoned the most likely effect was that you'd go blind.....  We stuck to the beer, Schultheiss and Barenbier.

Cally gently tries to nudge the topic back on course regarding internet connection speed, though acknowledges the very interesting discussions about disgusting/dangerous alcoholic beverages. Go to Top of Page

Looks like I shall be moving house soon, and will lose my Virgin Media internet connection.  No cable available at the new house, so I will need a new supplier. Any recommendations, or warnings? ( Internet  I mean, - I'll sort the brandy out for myself).

David, when Pluggy helped me get re-connected to Orange after my modem problems he said that the genuine 6mb speed I was getting was one of the highest domestic connection speeds he had ever seen. Funnily enough, Orange seem to be having some problems at the moment, very unusual but no email server. No doubt temporary, this connection is OK.

Tripps I've been with Tiscali for some years without major problems and despite paying for 8mb I get about the same as Stanley. I've just signed up to Talk Talk, who now own Tiscali before I have no choice in transferring. I'm now "guaranteed" 8.1 mb but we shall see. The rest of the package is saving me £12.00 a month on what I currently pay for broadband, free phone calls and line rental ...so if I still only get 6 mb I've no major worries. Nolic

I moved to PlusNet several years ago and get a steady, reliable 6MB connection with them. My two phone accounts are now with them too. They are friendly, transparent and responsive - I get emails every day giving warnings and explanations of what's going on. You can get help on the phone and in the forums, and the PlusNet staff respond in forums as well as other customers helping.

I was recommended to transfer to PlusNet by people in the computer industry because it was the ISP that they used and I've never regretted it. It was a small independent company and is now owned by BT but they still operate as an independent and have that business ethos.

Before I moved there I was getting only about 1 MB connection and other ISPs said I wouldn't get faster. But Plusnet persisted and got me 6MB!

Thanks for that. I have just measured my down speed with Virgin, and it is 9 Mbs. I'll be sorry to leave them.

Plusnet sounds like my sort of company, but sad to hear BT own them. I have reached breakdown point with them. A recent  problem saw me speaking to nine different people, including India three times, and still not resolved.  All assurances and promises just have not happened. Still sounds like Plusnet  remain seperate so that's a possible.  All complicated by phone and TV. Looks like I will be on the mobile for a few weeks.
I had thought of web'n walk for a year or so, but I have read elewhere that Cally has had her tap stopped for overuse, and some say it is very slow.   The jury is still out.

You wouldn't know that PlusNet have anything to do with BT, even to the extent that they don't get any preferred treatment with BT lines. If you need to contact PlusNet you will be speaking to their own folk in their office in Sheffield, not India! You can view them in the office on their webcam. There is PlusNet UserGroup too that is very active.

Orange have had an interesting morning. I had problems from the word go this morning, got onto Oneguy but than it all went pear-shaped. Suffice to say that when I eventually re-established a connection for my mail I got 1476 spam messages, that's right, 1476! After I deleted all thet lot I rang Orange to see what was going on with internet access and they told me that the whole of their system was down. It's back up again now but I'll bet there have been some very worried people. This still doesn't explain the enormous spam load and I'm beginning to wonder whther they have had some sort of denial of service attack. All seems OK again now and I've done a full Mcafee scan to check my system and it says that I am clean as a whistle. That's all I can do.....
