Thank you for allowing me here it looks a great site just joined tonight.

After 3 years of doing my family tree and nearly 2000 people on it I am hoping for some local information. The earliest  confirmed Proctor I have is William b abt 1806 not sure exactly where born but local and resident in Lothersdale as a Blacksmith who married Sarah Pickles on the 4 Jan 1821.

After 4 children William, Edwin, Francis and  the last being Moorhouse Proctor in 1833 shortly after the birth of Moorhouse Sarah sadly passed away.

I have found records for Moorhouse (with difficulty) with another family and the other children William, Edwin and Francis also with another family. William b 1824 moved to Bury lancs married Sarah Greenhalgh and had children.

I am having trouble locating William snr after this, I have scanned ancestry records and I have come up with a possible 3 within the period 1803 - 1806.

A William Proctor was convicted of Sheep Stealing on the 28 March 1835 and sentenced at York to  transportation to Van Deiman's Land (Tasmania), a record on the 14 May shows him on the ship Leviathan in Portsmouth and also shows he died on the 25 May on that ship.

I wondered if any local historians had any information on this incident?

The other 2 possible William Proctor's went abroad I think 1 to the US and 1 to Australia I am in the process of messaging them to try to find out more information.

If anybody has any information on this I would be very grateful.

Thankyou

Robert Proctor

Robert, welcome to the site. Do a forum search for Proctor, Sue posted three instalments of info but mainly the Lancashire side. Have you read Ken Wilson's 'History of Lothersdale. Published by the Parish Council in 1972? Lts on the site about Pickles if you search, they moved from Lothersdale to Kelbrook in about 1850 and becaome prominent in the district.

Welcome Robert, dont think I can help much, but I have done a bit of  research on the Proctor family who lived at the farm I live in now, which is just across the road from the Lothersdale area. If you look at the topic Proctors at Lower Burnt Hill, there is a lot of information from people who have been tracing this family line.
It was Samuel Proctor, born 1780 in Glusburn, who first came here in 1826 with his second wife Mary. He had previously been married to Ann and lived in Ickornshaw at one point.
I am sure I have been told that he had family from that first marriage who were farming in Lothersdale, and Salt Pie Farm comes to mind, but at the moment I cant find that information. I am wondering if there could be a connection. You have William aged about 15 when he married, seems a bit young?

Hello Wendy & Stanley thanks for the responses, I'm not exactly sure when my William was born the earliest possible match is 1796 then 1803 and finally 1806.

There are 4 possibilities all called William Procter

1 He moved to Bury and married Ellen Crawford in 1839. (his son also William moved to Bury and his other son Moorhouse moved to Lancashire and  married in Accrington in 1855.

2 He married Jane Hewitt in Horton in 1835 had more children and emigrated to Wisconsin USA.

3 He was convicted of sheep stealing in 1835 in York and transported to Van Deimens land but died on the ship 25 May 1835.

4 There is also 1 who emigrated to Australia.

I'll just have to keep digging.

Thanks

Robert

Think I might have something for you Robert, it answers a couple of questions and poses a couple more....
A quick online search of the local papers in the British Library's 19thC Newspapers brought up the following item from The Leeds Mercury of Saturday November 17th 1838.
In an item entitled;
"RUNAWAY HUSBANDS -- ABSCONDED & LEFT THEIR FAMILIES"
There are a couple listed for the Township of Skipton, and three for the Township of Carlton, amongst them is "William Procter - a blacksmith, aged 40, about 5ft 9inches, supposed to reside near Bury, Lancashire."
"Whoever will give information to Mr Carr, clerk of Skipton Union, so as to lead to their apprehension will be handsomely rewarded."

All you need is a Lancashire Library Card and this website. Choose 19th Century British Newspapers from the menu down the left hand side. I narrowed the search down to a date range between 1830 & 1850 and to a range of newspapers that covered this area. The Leeds Mercury always seems to come up trumps!

Thanks Wendyf, I have updated William (now born 1798 Horton Parish Yorkshire) on my tree and found a Census record for William in 1851 saying he is the uncle of William 30 (head) who is married to Elizabeth 28 and a child Jane 5.

There is also a Francis Proctor 28 (who I already have as a son of Wiliam)  on the same census).

Strangely this other William who married and went to Wisconsin is also from Horton (Gisburn Parish)

So is Horton Parish Yorkshire the same as Horton Gisburn Parish?

Thanks again

Did you try the barcode without spaces Robert?
Belle, have you got any further back with that family? I found it on the Lancashire online parish clerks  project, and was able to go back a generation or two further. There is no obvious connection to the LBH Farm Procters.

Ya Wendy no spaces it's because Bury is not in lancashire it's in Greater Manchester and not listed on that site as a library that you can renew your library books. Anybody want to swop library cards :)

I was going to check to see if my other grandfather was in it a Joseph Bryan b1870-1904 he was killed when he got knocked down by a train leaving my Grandmother without a father aged 3.

I have now changed William's (b1798) father to Samuel Proctor of Proctorheight Lothersdale  found lots of tree hints and added alot just trying to figure it all out now.

I've tried to get a Lancs library card, but no success.  I can't complete the form - the boxes don't seem to correspond to the data required - if that makes sense.  Wondered if anyone else had the problem?   Uncle Jim might be getting a  phone call  tomorrow, and I'll be a proxy member. Can't wait to get into 19th century newspapers......

Don't any other libraries have the same arrangement? You can subscribe here, but it's much better when its free!
I have a feeling that your Samuel may well be the same one who came here later.  If Joseph Bryan was killed in 1904 it might not be available on that website.
