LTP AWARD

I got mail yesterday from a lady who informed me “that the Association of Industrial Archaeologists have decided to give you their annual Fieldwork and Recording Initiative Award which we shall give as a Life Time Achievement Award for your excellent work on the Lancashire Textile Project".

I knew I was nominated but had let it drop off the radar because the idea of getting a national award seemed so preposterous. Well, it might be but they have decided that I’m the man!

In truth, this award is not for me, it’s for all the ordinary people who opened up and proved that not only were they articulate but they had a wonderful story to tell on many levels. Apart from being a goldmine of technical information about the processes and management of cotton weaving by steam, they gave a very detailed and clear picture of the family, social and economic life of the town.

Most of them are dead now and my only regret is that we can’t hire a bus and all descend on the awards ceremony in August. Just imagine that…..

The bottom line is that I was in the right place at the right time and was able to give them a voice. All their lives they were the powerhouse of the national economy and totally ignored. Nobody can ignore them now, their testimony is spread all over the world and will survive. So any award I get pales into insignificance beside that fact, they are on the record, their story is told and as they are the most complete source of information on the subject they will be remembered.

If there’s one thing I’d like to see come out of all this it is that others should do the same thing, get out there and record your grandparents, give them a voice and do all you can to spread the information. It’s the best memorial they could have.

(I've had mail from Colin Myers who says I am being smug. OK, he's right, I do deserve it and it's nice to know that a lot of people will take notice who wouldn't have been interested before. But the main points above still hold true, I always knew I was doing it to give the workers a voice, and about time too! But thanks Colin for the endorsement.)

(Colin has taken me to task.... I misread his mail and what he actually said was that I had every right to be smug. Apologies for sloppy work. He's still right!)

Stanley - you say that you "happened to be in the right place at the right time" but this doesn't really cover the reason for the award ie;the nouse, dedication and downright hard work that you have injected into the project.Well deserved!
The trouble is will you still speak to us common lot now??

John, of course I will. I have to, you're the only ones that are talking to me. It'll be interesting going down to herts because the Pres of the AIA is a bloke who I suspect hasn't a lot of time for me. You're right as well, a bit of credit is due but I always remember David Moore once telling me never to believe my own publicity. Not a bad rule to follow....

Thanks for the nice words folks.

Stanley, I've had access problems to the site so only just read this article. Stop making me sound like an arrogant so and so and correct your reference to my Email - I said you were being too modest and that you had every right to be smug !!!

Colin, I've edited the topic! I must have been asleep sorry about that but you are still right and thanks but I never thought of you as arrogant.... honest!.

I found out yesterday that there is a cash prize as well.... It had never entered my mind! Don't know how much. The lady who informed me is called Beauchamp and it's pronounced Beecham. Toyed with the idea of telling them that Challenger was pronounced Clanger but then thought better of it.......

Stanley Im thrilled for you! How nice to see hard work being recognised and rewarded! The other positive to this award is that it will bring even more publicity to your project, hence enabling people who are to date unaware of it the chance to read and enjoy!

Congratulations and Well Done!

You're right, that's the main benefit. It gives the project higher status.

I'm impressed! I don't get mine until this morning. Is it on the web? I met Sonia Rolt, Tom Rolt's widow down there, haven't seen her for years. What a good woman. Really pleased about that.

Every now and then I go to the LTP on the site and check access. I'm happy to say that thanks to Doc's maintenance everything is working well. The download is over 25mb zipped and I can remember wondering how many people would have the patience to access it but despite the slow internet speeds six years ago it went like hot cakes. The present score is 314 downloads but this doesn't take account of the copies accessed before the site was hacked. I think we may be running at about 500 copies in total.

The reason I am commenting is that of course I'm pleased, but more importantly it means that the project is so widely dispersed now that it could be as close to a permanent archive as we humans can get. This was always the intention and it's so nice to be able to report six years later that Oneguy has done a wonderful job. Well done Doc.
