Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

I once heard of a lady whose last act when leaving the house for ever was to fill the hollow curtain rod in the front room with frozen prawns.  Similar principle I think.  I once went to look at a maggot farm........  There used to be one at the top of Shineyford going over to Tod from Bacup, right next to the UFO observatory.  Quite appropriate I thought.....

I once had a go at breeding my own "Gozzers" when I used to match fish. Nolic will know the term but for the uninitiated a gozzer is a "super maggot". It goes like this, 1 chicken carcass placed in a bucket with a lid to stop the flies getting onto it too early. You have to let it get more than a bit "high" so I placed it in the old coalhouse which we used to store the kids bikes and stuff at our first house. It was summertime so it did'nt take long to get it primed. You then take the lid off and allow the flies to get at it to "blow" the meat with their eggs. The trick is to get the right type of fly (bluebottles) to do their stuff. Once that's done you need to keep further flies away and wait until the eggs hatch into maggots and start feeding on the rotting meat. You then feed them up by adding cream to the carcass, the maggots will stop feeding when their food pouches are full, by this time you should have quie a good gozzer. Comercially produced maggots are removed from the food source early to give a longer storage and usage cycle before they pupate into casters. Leaving them on the feed until they naturally stop feeding produces a bigger, fatter jucier maggot, ideal for attracting the better fish. The truly disgusting and smelly bit is separating them from the remains of the food in the bucket. You don't really want to do this on a full stomach!  The end result is some really good bait, ideal for match fishing. The trick is to time it right so you are at the separation stage no more than a day before you want to use the bait. I only ever got to try this once in the coalhouse in the height of summer. Sally put her foot down and banned me from further experiments with homebrewed baits. I have a belting worm farm now though in my composter in the front garden, (no smell either).

Sorry Cally, just telling it like it was (is), it's a lot easier to go to the bait shop! Back on boat things, all seems to be going well, best of luck.

Never tried breeding gozzers. Once had a load of pinkies get of of a box at the top of the cellar. These are mini maggots and they managed to find their way into the weave of the carpet. Knees and tweezers come to mind.
Worst angling related smell is worms that have died and gone off. Now that does pong. Nolic

The commercial maggot farm I visited had chicken carcasses hung up in rows over sloping plastic troughing.  As the maggots dropped off they gradually slid down the troughing to barrels of bran at the end.  Automatic process and did away with having to pick them off.  The smell was horrendous, the old bloke I was with and myself lit our pipes before we ventured in....  Worst thing I have ever smelt was old paper money stored in bulk in a safe.

Do you mind, lads?

I'm trying to eat my porridge!

Changing the subject - quickly:

After 2 years paying for central heating maintenance contract, I didn't renew it when it ran out on 21 October, owing to the move.

Yes, you guessed - it packed in last night. Boiler fires up but no hot water or heat to radiators. I assume the pump's gone. Grrrrrr.

Oh and by the way - the new set up doesn't work with my Safari browser - it won't let me post. Have had to use the slow and cumbersome Firefox. Hope this gets sorted.

BIG KEV IS A STAR!!! Yay

He came round, switched everything off and fired it all up again. It's now working perfectly.

Still can't post a message in Safari, though.Thumbs-down

Mel - let me know if you have any luck when you try the Mac. What model have you got? I could have sold you a top o' the range Intel Pro at a very reasonable price, as I'm swapping over to a MacBookPro for use on the boat.

Does anyone else want one? Go to Top of Page

Excellent news Cally.

It's a MacBook that we have. I can't  get more technical than that I'm afraid. We bought it on Saturday. Imindoors has a new (big) project on and the bossman is adamant it has to work across all platforms. We can check most but couldn't check the mac....so we got one as a development tool. We opted for the MacBook as we already have 4pc's and 3 laptops between the 3 of us! Not living on a boat but we do need the space. It also means we can take it to France and continue work over there.
Neither of us has used it much. I did think it might replace my laptop evenutally but there are programs that I use daily that Mac doesn't seem to support. I need to do a bit more digging to see if this really is the case though.
I like the look and feel of it and there are a couple of features that I do quite like, novelty things like the page minimise at the moment but I will continue to play with it. We don't have much loaded on it yet so haven't seen its full potential.
One thing imindoors did say...it's no better than a bog standard laptop but it's twice the price.....all because its Apple!

I'm afraid a lot of PC users think that initially. While not saying the Macs are superior in every way (they're not) you may find if you use it to its full potential on a regular basis that your opinion changes.

Someone borrowed my old G4 machine recently and didn't get along with it at all - possibly because you have to  use a different mindset to fully appreciate it and get to know the ins and outs. But it's only worth taking the time to do this if you've made a complete break with a PC.

I've been using a Mac since 1984 so it's not such a big learning curve whenever I upgrade to a newer machine. However, I can appreciate others must feel it's not worth the effort. And it isn't. Horses for courses, etc.

However, there's no reason why Safari shouldn't work on here - I haven't had any difficulties on any of the other forums I visit. And it's a lot prettier than Firefox. Go to Top of Page
