On my morning walk I found a big onion, partially damaged but clean. Waste not want not. Took it home, chopped it, fried in olive oil with salt, pepper and a dash of Worcester sauce. When it was nicely browned I added the clear stock from the last piece of pork I roasted. Reduced it till it was the consistency of a paste and hey presto, a very cheap, highly flavoured onion relish. Just the thing for spreading on a meat butty!

Spent yesterday afternoon making apple chutney (something I have never done before) now the 2 months wait to see if it is good. Freezer full of apple sauce and apple pies. Pork steaks with eating apples and honey tonight with broccoli, green beans and new potatoes.

Sally made a pan full of pear chutney yesterday from part of the bumper crop of pears from the tree in our front garden. Funny thing about this tree is that we grew it from a sapling planted best part of 20 years ago and it never produced any fruit until it was partly incinerated by a car fire which burnt a good 50% of the branches before the fire lads put it out. Once it started producing fruit it has got better every year. We have already had a few pear crumbles (yummy), the rest of the fruit will be processed into something that we can freeze down for use through the winter. Maybe a go with pear and ginger wine as well.

Had a late lunch (so possibly qualifies as 'tea') with friends at the Tempest Arms, Elslack today. Very tasty food and it's obvious why it won the 2011 UK Pub of the Year Award. Highly recommended.
The conversation turned to the fact that a well known cricketer used to own the place back in the 70s but none of us could remember his name.
Can anyone help?

Moh, are you still using your Halogen oven? If so are you still pleased with it? It's not like me to put off buying a gadget for so long, but I've been waiting for your seal of approval.

Yes I am, it makes lovely casseroles, curries etc. but I don't use it as a grill - it says it is self clean but I am not risking it. I haven't tried baking in it yet - will have to give it a go.

Moh. You triggered me off and I bought some very expensive sundried tomato and basil chutney at Brown's yesterday. Had a little cheese and pickle butty for supper. Lovely!

Think of the money you're saving Belle!
Had a beef butty last night and gave Jack the bits. I forgot he can't tolerate roast beef. But, being a good lad he let me know this morning that he was under stress. Must remember not to give him beef!
