Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Pandora - of COURSE you can - I'd be absolutely thrilled!

I've always, always wanted to do metal detecting. I once bought a cheapo detector off a car boot and within 2 minutes in the garden at Calf Hall had found something that seemed to be a short sword shape. Frantic digging revealed it to be a rusty gate hinge.

Just let me know when you want to come round. I'll get me spade ready.

On the boat names thing - I asked on one of the canal forums and they recommended Jim Sheard's website. There are 40,000 registered boat names on there - and I was pleased to find no reference to a Bernulf.

So "Bernulf of Barnoldswick" it is.Go to Top of Page

Thanks for that Cally, I'll bring my spare machine round so you can have a go as well, I'll PM you at some point.

Jim Sheard's, that's the one I was thinking about. Good name.

Marcia - I didn't put any of my stuff except guitar in Classifieds, but you're welcome to have a nosey round our house to see whether there's anything of interest. I think BK's coming round this evening to whip the sideboard away - we could crack open one of the 3 bottles of red wine which I found lurking at the back - didn't know they were in there!

Ooh! Might well pop round although tonight I am grocery shopping and tomorrow I am homechecking in Blackburn for a greyhound charity.  Doing anything at the weekend?

Hi Marcia - pop round some time Saturday? It would be nice to see you even if you decide you don't want any of our tatt tasteful belongings.

Who knows - by then me and Pandora might have unearthed a stash of Roman coins, in which case I'll be giving all our stuff away Go to Top of Page

I need it as well Cally, aren't you a popular girl! I know you are somewher off the bottom of Gissy Road but it would be nice to know exactly which garden to search. I'm at work at the moment but could manage later this afternoon or about same time tommorrow, any good?

PM with phone no would be great to sort out the final arrangements for the search.

Have PM'd you both.

Google Earth doesn't reveal much to my inexperienced eye, nor does the 1940s aerial photo (before estate was built) but you never know, do you?

While I'm on here, I wonder whether Thomo has had a chance to look at the boat yet? We saw it again last Saturday and the guy's managed to get a bit more painting done on it.

We're off camping down Norfolk/Cambridgeshire way soon, and will be visting the St Ives boatshow plus loads of marinas, checking out other boats for comparison.

And guess what? I bumped into Mutters on another website recently!Go to Top of Page

Ooh - off to look in classifieds. We're still home-making so are in need of some bits and bobs and would rather buy from friends!

Could do you a good deal on a sideboard

Back from a washed-out camping trip to The Wash, North Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.

Visited a boat on the River Cam which I'd seen on t'Internet and quite fancied - 61' 10', all mod cons etc. Nice layout. But no better than the one we've got our eye on at Barrowford and transporting it up here would be a nightmare.

Like Thomo says, if one boat keeps drawing us back time and again, then it's probably the right one. At least the expedition confirmed that we've chosen a good boat.Go to Top of Page

Saw some lovely boats on the Northwich marina and met some boaters, it is surprising where they originate from.  One couple were from Ilkeston in Derbyshire, when we asked them when they were returning home - they said November.  From Northwich they were making their way to London before returning to Derbyshire.

No, it's gone a bit quiet - perhaps TOO quiet!

Or maybe no news is good news - the people who put the offer in obviously haven't sold theirs yet, but at least they haven't withdrawn, touch wood.

We once visited Northwich Marina and saw a boat from Barlick moored up, but there was nobody in so we couldn't cadge a cuppa off them.Go to Top of Page
