Herb, the suitcase had gone by yesterday evening. We will never know the full story.
Look at this site for proof of the death of rail transport. ConDems must be blinkered.

I was wondering as I read Geoffrey Goodman's biography of Frank Cousins why nobody fighting government 'incomes policy' ever pointed out that it was no such thing. If you are going to arbitrarily limit wage claims why not make it a true 'incomes policy' by applying the same rules to everyone? Surely, if screwing down worker's wages is economic sense limiting the expense of management and executive wages and dividends would be good thing?
VAT rate went up at midnight to 20%. Such regressive way of taxing the electorate.Ask yourself what proportion of a person's disposable income is taken in tax and you'll soon realise how unfair it is. The simplest analogy is a Salt or Poll tax. No relationship between tax paid and ability to pay. VAT has one great advantage for the IR, the manufacturers/retailers who are forced to impose it have to do all the administratio.

In a lot of cases VAT is a Tax just ready for evasion, i.e.pay the Builder Cash no bill no VAT. Nowt wrong with the VAT increase you can manage it to a certain extent, use a little less Leccy or less Gas or the telephone. Negotiate with the shop when you go to buy something. Don't forget the VAT increase is 2.5 so it's not that great of an increase. Need to reduce the deficit somehow !!!!!

Stanley that is clutching at straws, you know as well as I do HS2 will not be coming to a Station near Barlick anytime soon !!! Rail can never pay for it's self even HS2, not enough passengers/revenue for the cost of the infrastructure/operation it really is simple. It needs subsidy from the people who are not using it You don't need a degree in economics to work that one out. I get a bit fed up paying taxes for someone to let the "Train take the Strain" don't you ???

Herb, rail experiences can be very variable here. Mrs Tiz regularly does a 240 mile round trip to her parents in London and she always uses the express bus service. It's a local bus company using a comfortable double-decker streamlined monster that she can access locally (no suitable rail service leaves locally) and it drops her nearer to her parents than the railways would. The price is a small fraction of the rail price. It's secure too, with a steward on board to accompany a relatively small number of passengers. Personal treatment! And supporting a local company.

Not sure how using less electric and gas would help with the VAT rise as these are rated at 5% and will be unchanged. Still, I'm sure folk will appreciate the sympathy of the exhortation to pop another jumper on (hopefully not newly bought for the purpose!) or crawl under the duvet. Or maybe not - we know 1000s of extra folk die each year when we have very cold weather as it is. God knows how many more we'd kill off if VAT here had gone up 2.5%. Probably a few more than the number we've seen off due to spend on promoting the flu vaccine being stopped, now of course reversed (a few deaths focus the mind).
On VAT, how are children's clothes defined? By the child, or by the design? Plenty of children have to have adult sizes and so incur VAT. Can this be claimed back?

If you spend less on Leccy, Gas and Phone ( high outgoings) you have more disposable income to pay the VAT increase from 17.5% to 20% What I am saying is it won't cripple anyone, we can all tighten our belts a little. I told our son to leave his mobile in the drawer and save some money to. I often wonder about Advertising something like a Flu Vaccine. We all know it is available down the Drs it is on the News in the Newspapers everyday. I think you are into your holding everyones hand mode Bruff.

Does this apply to domestic heating fuel too? I've been trying to find out and I think VAT stays at 5% on heating oil. It's important because our oil price has jumped dramatically in the last month. In November we paid about 45p a litre but it's now around 70p, over 50% more in one month! There is no mains gas here and most people use oil for heating, so some will be very badly hit. We saw instances last year of local people ordering oil from the companies then not paying after it was delivered because they hadn't checked how expensive it was. The winter fuel allowance won't go far for pensioners this year if they are using oil for heating.

Please could we change the title of this topic....last night a local earthquake attracted my attention and it seems you all just want to go on and on squabbling about politics etc, we need a new "what attracted your attention?" topic where everyone on the site can actually discuss what did attract their attention without it being immediatley diverted back to the same people arguing .....

Yes Belle, there was indeed an earth tremor in the Yorkshire Dales, don't yet know the magnitude (I will find out). This was felt in Lancashire and across to Lincolnshire. Probably a movement on the Craven fault.

Sunray, if you look back a page you will see i put it on here at the time as I live near the epicentre, so it'a tad patronising to have you "confirm" it for me nearly 24 hours later.

Herb surely not, if I post something that is local to me, and happening to me, with all the statistics, I don't need it confirming 24 hours later by someone who was not aware of it has missed my original post. Especially as a reply to the fact that my original post was being ignored. My point is and was the title of this topic would lead one to believe it was the right place to post information like an earthquake in the UK, it is quite attention grabbing after all.
