Nice pic, but Barnoldswick traces its history back to the Anglo Saxons in the 7th century when Bernulf is said to have created a "wick" or settlement. I think maybe the Vikings were too scared to raid us! The Cistercian monks in 1170 who tried to build a monastery certainly thought so.

The monks arrived from Fountains in May 1147. Barnoldswick was spelt Bernulfeswic in The Domesday. England's population then was numbered in a few thousands. (Info from Barnoldswick and West Craven Official Guide with Maps) 2s. 6d.
