These were seen in every mill that had an engine. If you broke the glass it sounded a siren in the engine house and tripped the governor rod so that steam was shut off to the engine. It was intended for use if somewone was caught up in the shafting or machinerey. Trouble was that it took at least three minutes for the shefting to stop.
