On a technical point, Power to the People is a BET article that got a lot of responses....
Tiz, dead right. I have banged on for years about thermal efficiency, not only in usage but production as well. The best we ever got out of conventional electricity generation from coal was the embedded power stations serving district heating instead of using cooling towers. Every time I see city centres blazing with advertising signs I wonder why we allow it. Think of the heat wasted by automotive engines, even the most efficient diesel running under optimum conditions wastes 50% of the energy in the fuel.

I have yet to see anyone offering Triple Glazing which is standard in Germany

Well, now then. How silly of me not to look under "Local History". Will I never learn??? Where else would you expect to find it? Well it could have been anywhere. It could have slipped down the back of the sofa or even slid under the sideboard. Topics can sometimes be tricky little beasts....as I have just discovered.

Triple glazing is easy enough to get in the UK but it's expensive and not worth bothering with unless you've got your house walls, roof and ground floor well insulated first.

I once was offered a job lot of triple glazed window units ( a wheeler dealer in Potters Bar had acquired three containers full from Russia as part of a barter deal for two tractors. I could not get any main d/g company or housebuilder remotely interested in them ( didnt meet BS standards for fixings etc - well no proof of ) , and far to heavy to fit in my car.
Adverts - come down to london , quad florcesent lit large poster units - same as bus stop sized , all over the underground pumping out yet more heat , loads of LED and plasma TVs up the escalator sides showing distracting new fangled moving advertisement and pumping out yet more heat , yet we are still asked domestically to reduce our electric consumption.
The Views above may or may not be true , I may or may not agree with them. |

Kopf und krank spring to mind....
What grabbed me was a nice story on today about the fate of what is thought to be one of the last battery hens in the UK. The cages are illegal from January 1st and unlike many other EU countries, the UK has actually complied with the law putting us at a disadvantage when you consider that estimates of caged hens still producing cheap eggs in the EU vary from 80 to 100 million. Just one example of how we disadvantage ourselves by applying the rules. See this LINK.
The hen in question is being liberated by a lady who has spent over 30 years fighting for the abolition of the old cages. The brown hen, to be named 'Liberty' is going to have a free range retirement and will never be slaughtered. I thought of Wendy and her liberated birds. Bugger the rest of the EU, we have done the right thing. Problem is of course that we will never be sure that processed egg used by the food wizards is from better treated hens. It will be cheaper and that's all they care about.

Stanley, I fear that the danger expressed in the last para of your letter will only too easily be the result. The only hope, as eventually was the case with hydrogenated oils, is for the consumer to be very careful of the ingredients in the foods he's buyimg
