Bit complicated for me to explain but I am also hoping someone can help me in very simple terms.
A friend received an email with zip attachments which are photographs. He was using Lotus.
He has forwarded the email to me. I use Thunderbird on Windows 7.
How do I get these zip files to show the photos inline in the email?
It is quite important as there is a criminal prosecution pending and receipt of these photos plays an integral part in proving a deception. I've searched ont'interweb but can't find an answer which either seems to fit or I can understand.
Many thanks

In my experience of zip files Anni, you need to save them before you can open them.

It is some time since I used Windows but I remember that it was necessary to have an "unzipping" utility to extract files from a zipped package.
I do not know if W7 has such a thing but, if not, downloading WinZip from the link below should give you the necessary.
Just save the zip file to some where (I used to make a seperate folder and save to that, and then invoke the "unzip" of the winzip app.

Many thanks.
I have unzipped the folders and have the photos.
My problem is showing them as photos in the original email. For some reason, others who received the same email have been able to show the photos as inline attachments in the received email.
We know we were all sent the same email - I just don't quite understand why one email from one person, shows it differently to the same email to another person, but suspect it is linked to the fact that this particular person was using Lotus notes at the time and it was how that was set up. I have a feeling it is an insurmountable problem as non of us are tekkis.
I have found a sort of way round the problem and hope it will be acceptable to the legal team.
One day, I will write a book!

Anni, I use Thunderbird too, although on Linux not Windows. I wouldn't expect it to open zip files - in fact I've just sent myself a zip file of images to confirm it and they don't display inline. You need to save the zip file, extract the image files and then view them in your software as normal. Thunderbird probably doesn't open them inline for safety reasons. Zip files are notorious for containing viruses went sent in spam etc and you don't know what might be inside them. So you don't want them being opened without your making the decision.
If the prosecution depends merely on receipt of the photos then you have the zip file and can show it contains them by opening it and then displaying the images in graphics software. If the zip file was received, the images were received. Whether the images would be visible inline in the message itself depends not only on the email software used but on the settings chosen by the user. For instance in Thunderbird you can go to View and then tick/untick `Display Attachments Inline'.

Thanks Tizer.
What we eventually did was for the original email to be sent from the person who received it to me with the zip attachments.
I opened them in a folder on my hard drive.
Then attached them back on to the email and sent them back to the person who sent them to me with the original email still showing.
He then sent the email back again and hey presto - I have all the pictures with the names of the attachments in the email!
It isn't perfect but it shows the original email, the names of the attachments and the photos named the same as the attachments.
It is a case in another country so slightly different rules of evidence and engagement apply We'll see what the lawyer says when I hand it all over to her in a couple of weeks. If she can't accept it, we have 9 others where the attachments are in line and no problems.
